Motivate And Retain Employees Through Training And Development

Author: Jim Brown

People may come and go in a particular company. Others may stay long and loyal even up to the point of retirement while others leave early on or in a couple of years for certain reasons. Such reasons could either be being offered a better paying job someplace else, deciding to pursue further studies, getting bored with the existing job or basically losing the motivation and drive to stay with the current employer.

Employees are motivated to work by several factors. Of course, the financial factor involved is one that you cannot erase from the picture for many if not majority work for the money. But one key factor though that motivates and encourages employees to work and to stay with their current employer is the availability of opportunities for him or her to grow within the company and advance his or her career through training and development.

Different employees may have different view points about the type of training and development opportunities they wish to get. Training and development is not just all about attending external training seminars and classes. Within the company itself training and development can range from promoting hard-working employees to higher responsibility positions or even just rotating employees to different departments to give them the opportunity to learn other skills that could prove to be useful for their career development.

The type of responsibilities that an employee currently has on his or her current job can significantly impact his or her training and development in the company. Expanding his or her current duties with higher level responsibilities, reassigning routine tasks and assigning new ones can train and prepare that employee for higher job positions or job openings for other departments within the company. More room for decision making, planning and supervision responsibilities should be given. Afford as well the opportunity for employees to train in other duties and responsibilities.

External seminars as well as the company’s internal training sessions can help develop and further enhance both an employee’s skills and knowledge. Enable your employees to take online classes whether they are work-related or for further knowledge. Provide flexible work schedules to enable them to attend university or college classes to further pursue advance studies or continuing education.

Employees should be given the opportunity to pursue training and development not only work-related but also in what they choose to be interested in. Any company should support and rally for learning. Apart from motivating and retaining employees, training and development can create employees who will benefit the company and who will benefit themselves as well from the learnings that they have gained.

How would you develop a security awareness-training plan for employees and franchisees.?
The company that I am referring to is concern about hackers, terriorist threats, security problems, computer viruses, employee safety, or how to convey to the employee security problem.

I would work with a professional trainer who can develop the plan appropriately. Do a complete needs analysis to determine what you want to train the employees on, and develop a test to determine the training has completed. Then develop a training program.

All essays makes a statement and the statement is a point supported by a proof with a comment on how our understanding has grown or changed based upon this research.

A standard essay contains three parts
      Opening
      Body
      Closing

Each part of an essay is composed of paragraphs.

All paragraphs are composed of three elements.
      Point
      Proof
      Comment.

A small essay may look like this.

The opening paragrapsh asserts a point, proves that the assertion is valid by pointing to evidence, and then makes a comment on why the point is of interest.

Point: All red balls are red.
Proof: Red balls collected from all parts of the globe and studied by experts in colour have concluded that all red balls are red.
Comment: Accordingly funding for further study has been denied based upon the matter being classified as worthy of notice only.

The body of the essay may make three points that support the opening point.

The three points are dealt with separately in three paragraphs in accordance with the format.

Support Point 1. The work of Sampson and Goliath tells us that all balls gathered in Asia were determined to be of a red colour.
Supporting proof 1. The records of Sampson and Goliath were preserved in a mudslide and are considered to be accurate recounts.
Comment. This study is probative of the premise that all red balls are red since all red balls in Asia are red.

Support Point 2. The work of Sodom and Gemhora done a century later expanded the study in Europe.
Proof of point 2. Their work was conducted under the scrutiny of J who was credited with dilligence and precision as a reputation.
Comment. The Asia study is confirmed by the European Study.

Support Point 3. This matter was ordered closed by the Emperor after riots broke out over fraudulent claims of some red balls as being brown. The Emperor was unsuccessful in keeping the matter closed. Proof 3. The excavations of Utrichia disovered wall paintings. At that time paint specialist had devised new techniques for analyzing pigment. It was found that brown changed into red over time.
Comment. The purity of the Asian study and the European study was now open to question.

The final paragraph has the same format but it synthesises the three points in the body as its point. It reviews the proofs by linking them together. Then it makes a comment.

Final Point: While all red balls are red, not all balls are red and this alters the purity of findings on red balls. The third point in this essay examined ancient wall paintings and the proof therein tells us that some pigment change colour over time.

The comment of the final paragraph should contrast the opening point and the final point.

Final comment. It may be the case that not all red balls are red all of the time. Funding for new studies on this matter will give preference to those who demonstrate valid suspicions regarding the true colour of other balls. We will not consider squares or triangles at this time.

The final comment and the opening premise should cover some intellectual distance. In other words the opening premise should evolve into the closing comment or stand in oposition to it.

This is an example of a well composed essay. Research means to learn about something. You are going to examine the nature of a matter by showing how it develops or you are going to examine the nature of a matter by contrasting it to what it is not.

As to citation you have to inquire what format of citation is expected from the nature of the essay. Citation in a legal essay has its own special rules. Generally however a citation is the name of the source, the author, and an indentification of where in the work your informaiton can be found such as XXXX journal, 1990 series 4, Spring issue, page 43.

Example: Asian Red Balls and Thier Predecessors, by Sampson and Goliath, Pompeii Collection, facsimile release 1990 by Excavations International, files 112 to 117.

You can yahoo search “academic citation standards”. However your professor or teacher will have a preference.

Primarily the goal is to keep yourself clean of claiming credit for the work of others. So long as you do that then the details of format are of secondary importance.

Research is incredibly siimple. Just remember POINT PROOF COMMENT over and over and over. Every point you make should have proof and a comment. Every proof you use should have a point and a comment. Every comment should have a point and proof. Every essay is making a point and demonstrating the proof with an explanation of the proof and the point which is the comment. Every part of the essay is a unit of a point, proof, comment. Stack all of them together in an orderly fashion and you have a research paper. From a children’s story to a doctoral thesis the format is the same. Ta da! You just got an education that your teachers do not have. Go knock em out!

In Human Resource, does college teach most of the skills you’ll need?
In regards to developing employee training or maybe dealing with benefits, do you learn how to do this thoroughly in college? Or is much of it based on individual creative and/or research?

    Thanks :)
    Shut up Anthony!

      Hi There!

I’ve found that college gives you a board perspective on theories and concepts. Dealing with benefits can get really complicated and employers are looking for applied experience. The best place to learn more about benefits is World@Work (www.world@work.org) This HR association focuses specifically on benefits. You can locate your community chapter at this main website and network with professionals. They have student memberships.

Another great place to learn applied HR items is to get on the local employment law firms email lists. They will send information about seminars. They are often free!

If you are interested in developing employee training, you might be interested in joining ASTD. (American Society of Training and Development). You need to proof it. There shouldn’t be a single mistake on a resume. Yours has lots and they are distracting.

The dates don’t make sense. You were at LaPerla from 2002 to the present, yet you were with Stonefield from 2005-2007. Seems to me one of those sets of dates is wrong. Are you sure it’s not LaPerla from 2002 to 9/2005?

Some of your bullets are in the past tense; others aren’t. You say “monitor sales team” and then later “established relationships”. Why the different tenses?

Some words that should be capitalized are not.

Your qualifications look good, but if you make sloppy mistakes on a resume, I wouldn’t hire you.
