What is the best way to obtain a fast ESL teaching certification (i.e. short intensive programs).?
I have a degree in Spanish but, unfortunately, do not have a teachers certification. Is there a way to get an ESL certification without enrolling fulltime in school again? I love and want to teach in Georgia but would be willing to go somewhere else if the program was reputable and shorter than, say, grad school.
Hi!
I did a four week full time TESOL course half in Manchester and half in Spain. You can also do the course part time – a day a week or in the evenings. I would recommend trying to find the four weeks as the course is intensive. I would also recommend sticking to the well recognised Trinity College or Cambridge certificates. There are loads of courses you can do all over the country.

Which is a more marketable certification for teaching ESL, TESOL or TEFL?
Many foreign jobs teaching English as a Second Language require certification in either
TESOL or TEFL. Are they equally marketable or is one likely to open more doors?
Thanks
In this context, TEFL, TESOL and TESL certificates are pretty much interchangeable. The most common, however, is the TEFL Certificate.
ESL Certification for Teaching Overseas?
I am considering teaching outside of the US next year, and wanted to know what the certification process is. I already hold a B.A. in English Education and have a teaching license. I understand the process is different than going through without an Eng/Edu degree, but I can only seem to find certs for people without the education background.
If anyone knows how to go about getting certified, or has done it, any information would be great. Thanks!
In general, schools overseas ask for a degree (usually for the visa) in any subject along with a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate to show you can teach English. In practice almost any TEFL certificate will suffice for most first jobs. Most schools won’t ask for or even know what a US teaching license is.
The most common way to get the TEFL certificate either at a local school to you or online (see http://icalweb.com). Note that there’s no single awarding body as each provider has their own course/certificate.
What kind of certification is usually helpful in getting jobs teaching esl?
I have heard so many different acronyms. What is the certification I need to teach English in many European countries?
In Europe, most employers are looking for a “CELTA” (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults), a “Trinity Cert TESOL” (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or equivalent. These are 120 hour, classroom-based courses and include several hours of observed teaching practice.
To keep your employment options as open as possible, one of these courses, or an equivalent in terms of length and content, are the best to go for. There are many other good quality courses available, with many acronyms (!) but generally speaking, the shorter and less classroom-based your course, the more limited your options will be when it comes to finding a job.
If you’re looking for somewhere to take one of these courses, I would try one of these sites:

How can I find a reputable ESL (teaching english as a second language) certification program?
I want to get a quality certification that is recognized internationally so I can find a job teaching english abroad.
If all you want is a certificate, do the CELTA. The name CELTA is widely recognized in Europe, and the certificate that you get upon completion clearly states TESOL so you can use it in Asian markets as well. It’s a basic four-week, full-time program with six hours of supervised teaching practice. Use the link below to find a center near you.
By the way, the only way to get a decent job in TEFL is to also have a Bachelor’s degree. A degree is needed to get a work visa in almost every country.
