How do you get certification for a specific subject area if you go thru a alternative teaching program?
I am looking into a Alternative Teaching certification Program to become a teacher. I currently have a bachelors of health administration(nothing to do with teaching) and I now want to become a elementary school teacher or middle school math teacher. The alternative program only provides general teaching courses , would I have to seek additional classes on my own to specialize in a specific subject area? Being that this is not my area of original study I’m guessing I would have to have a certain amount of credits in a subject area.. is this correct?Any advice would be helpful.

You are correct. All such programs simply provide the methods and curriculum courses as well as supervision and student teaching. When you apply – you will find out that they require you to already have the subject specific credits in place. They will take care of all the teaching courses – you take care of the math courses.

now most applicants will already have the proper background – but with your degree, you most likely do not have the mathematics background. All states now require a major equivalent in your subject area to teach beyond grade 6. If you do not have the 32 semester units of upper division mathematics coursework – you will not be considered “highly qualified”. (a NCLB term) Some universities have seperate programs to provide the needed content … see UCLA’s here:

      http://www.math.ucla.edu/mcpt/

Once you have the units – you will be required to pass a subject matter competency test.

If you choose to go elementary – they will compare your BA to the states required list to see where your deficiencies are – you can then go to any college and make up classes. (on your own)

Alternative programs are alot of work….

I’m starting the Alternate Teaching Certification Program in the Fall.?
This will allow me to get my Master’s in Education along the way. I’m graduating from college in May and I am running out of money. Are there any chances to get a paid internship or anything regarding education for the summer? Or should I just be a waiter or something for a few months? How much money would you guess a waiter can make at like 30 hours a week? Any other suggestions?
