Health Care Boom Opens Up Huge Demand for Support Staff

Author: Patty Norton

           Not all of us have what it takes to become a physician or surgeon. These high-payinga€”and demandinga€”professions require huge investments of time and money, not to speak of the fierce competition to get into medical school. But, if you’ve always wanted to work in a hospital or doctor’s office, becoming a healthcare support staffer might be just the shot in the arm your career needs. With training from a top-notch career college, in about 8 to 10 months, you can be a valued team member in a lab, pharmacy, physician’s office or dental practice.

            According to the Department of Labor, health care is the second fastest-growing sector of the U.S. economy, employing over 12 million workers. California, in particular, has a shortage of health care professionals, with vacancies across the state, raising salaries and increasing employment opportunities for high school graduates, career changers and other job seekers.

            Although the media has focused on the critical need for registered nurses (RNs), well-trained and competent clinical support staff, such as Medical Assistants and Surgical Technologists, as well administrative support staff, including Health Claims Examiner/Medical Billers, are also an essential component in providing quality health care services.

            In the past, on-the-job training might have been sufficient to become a member of a medical/dental office or lab support staff.  But today, the bar has been raised: workers need to hit the ground running, with a complete understanding of the advances in medical technology, as well as the knowledge and practical skills necessary to be competent in different environments, whether private, public, governmental or university-based. As a Medical Assistant, for example, you might expect to help out with basic insurance billing, medical records and other office skills, but you might also check vital signs or help set up for physical exams. Medical Assistants have found work in hospitals, clinics, HMOs, and home health organizations.

            Other hands-on, patient-oriented careers that have been increasing along with a growing and aging population are Massage Therapist, Pharmacy Technician, and Dental Assistant. If you find you enjoy these roles, it’s possible to go on and receive further education to become a registered nurse or physician assistant.

            One exciting health care option is a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, an ultrasound professional who performs clinical assessments and diagnostic examinations. Imagine the gratification of being able to track a baby’s growth or help diagnose a tumor or organ disease. You can use your love of anatomy and physiology without needing years of intense schooling, while earning a satisfying living.

            Optical Dispensing is another field with limitless potential. With a majority of the population requiring eyewear, an optical dispensing specialist who passes the National Opticianry Exam and Contact Lens Registry Exam can be qualified to work as a ophthalmic lab technician, contact lens fitter, eye doctor’s assistant, manufacturer’s representative or optical office manager. You can even open your own store someday –an exciting and challenging opportunity to realize your financial and personal independence.

            No matter what health care support staff position is right for you, look for a fully accredited college with qualified faculty, modern facilities, and placement assistance. An admissions representative can help you figure out where your aptitude and talents lie. And when the time comes, you can receive help with interviewing skills, resume preparation, and job leads.

            a€œI felt like I was in a dead end in my career, and now a whole new world has opened up for me,a€ said one recent healthcare graduate.

    Does ex-spouse have right to know new employer if child support being paid through state agency?
    I had a brief period of unemployment and re-hired at new job where they are processing the court ordered amount. I wondered if anyone knew, in state of Nebraska, if the payee, has the right to know my new place of employment. the Child Support NE websites cater to the recipients of child support and payors are treated like criminals. I can’t get straight answers from website or state officials. they want you to call during business hours, a specific case worker, who doesn’t even know the FAQ’s on their own website. I’ve told written the child support staff I can’t call to discuss during busines hours as new job means training and very little privacy for such personal matters. But they answer every emails with the same auto reply “you need to call blah, blah, blah” and when I can even call, my case worker is out, and they want me to call back when convenient for THEM. It’s all very demeaning and nearly impossible for a payor of child support (and diligent payor) to get respect.
    Clarifying for MR WIZARD: the EMPLOYER DOES know (as stated), the agency does know the new employer (as stated). My question is, since I don’t pay the ex-spouse directly, and she is abusive, unethical, and probably a sociopath, does she have the legal right to find out my employer? From the state? I mean, I don’t see why, as long as she’s getting her court ordered funds, but then I don’t see why the court is skewed in the recipients direction on many issues. So that’s my question, does she have right to access such info. She has been an interfering presence at previous jobs and I absolutely minimize any contact with her.

      this is what sucks, they can get anything they want because of certain anatomy but however if your ex is drug using whore and you want to be sure if your money is going to your child and not up her nose, they say sorry cant give out that kind of info so face it bro your damned if you do damned if you dont, welcome to the “non” sexist legal system uh huh “cough cough” bullsh*t. so basically more than likely yes they can file for it because there right and your wrong its really sh*tty

    Do you work in a library as support staff? Is this a nice job?
    Are you a library services assistant or technician, someone without an MLIS degree? I will be graduating soon with a BA in Writing/English and can’t imagine working anywhere else but in a library! It’s my dream job! I would go get an MLIS degree but I’m burned out from school and the ALA accredited programs are so far away. So now I’m looking into other jobs at libraries and might like support staff. I know the pay stinks, though. But if this is what you do for a living, can you give me any info about it, like why you do it, what you like and don’t like about it, how long you’ve been working at the library, and average salary. Also, did you have to get special training or certification–is this what employers are looking for in support staff at libraries? I’m sooooo curious and want first-hand knowlege of the field. Thanks!

      Right now I’m a library assistant. I do have an MLIS, but I’m still looking for a full-time librarian job. My job right now is great…I love being around books all the time; everything I could ever want to read or watch is pretty much at my fingertips. The work itself is pretty easy in my case…it’s mostly helping patrons with reference and assisting the clerks…but that depends on the library. The pay doesn’t stink…right now I’m at $15/hour, part time. There isn’t really any certification you need, but a good library will always have training sessions for staff members. I would still urge you to get your MLIS, though…even if you put it off a few years. It’ll be worth it, you’ll have more opportunities, and then you will get paid more too. Good luck!

    A cyclist leaves his training base for a morning workout, riding at the rate of 14 mph. One hour later, his support staff leaves the base in a car going 50 mph in the same direction. How long will it take the support staff to catch up with the cyclist once the car leaves the base?

    • iceman says:

      d = vt = 14 * 1 = 14 miles → cyclist distance when staff leaves
      50 -14 = 36 → staff closing-in speed
      t = d/v = 14/36 = 0.388 hrs or 23.34 minutes

    End user support training programme?
    My boss has asked me to create a training program for end users. Recently we have upgraded our booking system

    Has new levels of access to staff and managers
    Connected to a central network
    Be able to print reports on booking

    I am in charge of creating a training program for the other workers. I do not know where to begin can anyone help me?

    • niknah says:

      Firstly, do you know how this new booking system works?
      If not, maybe you need to get some training for yourself first, while you’re there remember how they’re training you.

      If you do know then just go through the booking routine with them, like stuff that they would do every day.

    Where to market our customer support office?
    Can someone recommend a good way to market our small call center for outsourcing? The staff is trained for American and Brittish customer support. Please let me know where you would recommend or if you need a small customer support center.
    Edit: we are based in Sweden and we offer customer support. We have experience in customer support for web merchants mainly and even gaming merchants. We wish to add expand. As of right now we have 2 seats and are looking to expand to 10 seats. We have a website which tells what services we offer (www.rehabilia.se) however it has been difficult to find the right market for such a small operation.
