Five Tips for Staying Positive
Author: Bob Corcoran
“No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit.” Helen KellerChances are good that if you’re reading this – given the title – you’re not feeling positive about today’s real estate market.
Well, let me relieve some stress. The market has been abnormally strong over the last four years, so the market is not a down market, it’s a traditional market, and anyone who’s been in real estate more than four years knows this. The market is doing what it does naturally; it’s adjusting itself.
So stop fretting about the market. If you’re not as busy as you want to be, then go over to the phone and start making calls. But before you pick up that receiver, here are five things to do:
1.Adjust you’re thinking. This is a nice segue from the introduction. You choose how you feel. A traditional market doesn’t make you feel any way; you make yourself feel the way you do. No one else, no event, nothing. It’s you. Period. If you like books, grab a copy of “The Traveler’s Gift” by Andy Andrews. He’s a big fan of personal responsibility and he’s about as motivational as they come.
2.Get a plan. I’ve been in the real estate consulting game now for 15 years and it still amazes me that many agents simply don’t operate like a business. The first item every business should have is a business plan. Without one, you’re sailing rudderless.
3.Set small goals. No doubt, part of your business plan will have goals. Make sure they’re realistic and small enough so that you can actually make headway with them. I often see starry-eyed agents who set these grandiose goals only to trip on them and fall into a big pile of discouragement.
4.Get an accountability partner. This may be a neighbor, a co-worker, a broker or a personal coach. But no matter who it is, this person is charged with making sure you’re striving for and reaching your goals. An outside perspective is essential.
5.Reassess your peer group. Take a look at who is around you in your daily life. Are they positive or negative? Helpful or hurtful? Toxic or healthy? It’s been said you should fear an evil friend more than a beast because a beast can wound your body, but an evil friend can wound your mind. Keep positive people near you at all times and purge the rest.
I’ll leave you with this thought: We’re all given the same opportunities in this life, and what you do with them is entirely up to you.
Best of luck to you!

I need help staying positive while losing weight?
I’ve lost 20 lbs so far and I could really use some help and any tips on staying positive through this process, sometimes I just want to give up. Any advice?
Eat a Cookie
What is the key to staying positive at work?
I’ve always moved up and down when it comes to my enthusiam at work. I love my job, but some months I’m more enthusiastic than others and it shows on my paycheck. How can you stay positive at work?
Make the choice that it’s all about getting the job done while you are on the clock. Nothing outside is going to make it happen. You have to do it on the inside, each day.
What is your best kept secret to being/staying positive and happy?
Day to day, we all struggle to be happy people, I’m wondering how many of you have made the decision to be a happy person and what is your trick to staying positive
1) Keep an open mind
2) Don’t let them laugh at you, but laugh WITH them.
3) Every gray cloud has a silver lining. Just look at the silver lining, no matter how thin it is.
4) Never compare yourself to someone you are likely to envy. Instead, think about there are billions out there who are much less fortunate than you in so many more ways than one. Count your blessings.
5) Three ways to deal with people who’ll get you down. Either:
I) Always stay away from them if you know they’re out to make your day horrible
II) Try to see what their problem is, then have a go at helping them. If you succeed, it’s a great feeling.
III) Ignore them
6) Know whose opinion to care about. There are people out there who are bound to say things against you for no reason at all. Listen to people who you know are truthful and trustworthy enough to determine for yourself who you are being
That’s it for me, I think. Hope I didn’t sound too imperative or bossy with any of that.
Staying positive….?
I have volleyball tryouts coming in less than a month. I didn’t make the team last year, and now I’m about to be a junior and I’ve worked extremely hard all year(especially this summer and during club season) so I’m going to try out again.
I need some tips on how to be mentally prepared, not get down on myself or get frustrated, and how to not get intimidated by the other girls. I find that when I play with people I know aren’t as good as me, I play to my max potential but when I’m with girls I’m intimidated by, I start to lose my game.
I really would like to make the team this year, and I need to get the proper mindset before tryouts come.
Any tips would be really helpful, thanks!
I also have a problem similar to yours. This last semester the varsity coach had me practice with varsity even though I was only a freshman. I felt so intimidated the entire semester and to be honest, I never felt comfortable practicing with them. Now that I look back on my experience, I wish I’d been more outgoing and positive about it. I talked to my coach about what I could do and she taught me the best trick ever:
I started to do yoga over the summer and I now have really good control over my mind. Your mental game is just as important as your skills. I’ve been going to open gyms and practicing with the same girls that used to intimidate me, but I no longer feel intimidated. Good luck at tryouts!
Can someone give me some good quotes about staying positive?
I need some quotes that talk about being positive because ive taken a turn on life and want to show ppl im going to stay positive. i just need some quotes showing positivity and staying committed to it. can anyone help me with that?
- Fear less, hope more; Eat less, chew more; Whine less, breathe more; Talk less, say more; Love more, and all good things will be yours
- The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.
- When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.
- When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we took so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened up for us
Hope this helps!
