Can Landlord Lock Me Out ...

The Difference Between Self Esteem and Ego

Author: Suzi Elton

There’s a lot of talk about “self esteem”, how to have it, what it is, what it means. However, what passes for self esteem is often simply ego. That might seem a perplexing statement. First let’s get a little clarity on what healthy self esteem is. It is a balanced and unexaggerated self respect and self love. It combines a healthy regard for the self with a healthy regard for others. Healthy self esteem esteems others as equally as the self. Others are treated and regarded as respectfully as the self.

Ego, on the other hand, always believes in its own self importance above the importance of others. Ego always requires outside approval, validation, and constant attention and gratification. Ego believes in its own superiority above all others. Some versions of ego insist on inferiority as a role. Both inferiority and superiority are lies though, and variations of the same theme — of feeling “less than” others. Here are some ways to recognize ego and distinguish it from self esteem:

1.) It’s ego when we are condescending, rude or disrespectful of wait staff, retail clerks, parking valets, or anyone we imagine is “less important” than us. Those with healthy self esteem are respectful to all they come into contact with.

2.) It’s ego when we use anger to manipulate others, get our way, or attempt to communicate our supposed superiority. Those with healthy self esteem have healthy boundaries and desire to communicate respectfully and non-manipulatively.

3.) Ego is about the one note song, “mi, mi, mi”. When we talk incessantly about ourselves and show no interest in others that comes from ego. A person with healthy self esteem does not need to be the center of attention at all times. Healthy self esteem is more frequently expressed by showing genuine interest in others, and making sure conversation flows among all participants.

4.) When we are expressing ego, we are spectacularly lacking in compassion. We judge harshly, show no empathy, and find fault easily. When we are expressing healthy self esteem, we are able to be compassionate without being codependent (unable to set healthy boundaries, “people pleaser”). We are able to understand the viewpoints of others and have a genuine interest in them.

5.) When we are being egotistical, we believe we know everything about everything and that we are right about everything we “know”. We believe that the opinions of others are “stupid”, ill-advised and just plain wrong. When we are coming from healthy self esteem, we are willing to hear the opinions of others and we’re able to entertain the notion that their opinion is their opinion and we don’t have to agree. Both people can be right (and OK).

6.) When we are coming from ego, we are unwilling to pay the least attention to the interests of others. We single mindedly expect everyone to share our interests, but don’t reciprocate. When we have healthy self esteem, we are curious about the interests of others. Even if we don’t want to actually share the interest, we want to share their delight in their interest.

7.) Impatience is frequently a sign we are expressing from ego. Often, it derives from feeling self important and that the world owes us attention (or priority) whenever we want it. Sometimes our impatience is actually the result of our own failures such as not leaving in enough time to get somewhere and being highly impatient in traffic. When we’re coming from healthy self esteem, we have highly developed patience and we live our lives strategically enough that we don’t waste our time in situations that require extreme patience.

There is a huge difference between ego and healthy self esteem. The most significant thing is that when we are coming from ego, it is obvious to everyone but us!

Is landlord’s remedy of self-help by eviction without the involvement of the courts permitted in Oregon?

    fake forclosure to evict…..?
Ok so heres the deal, ive rented out a property and the lease expired. We have been using a month to month lease for awhile now, but the tenant is behind 2 months on rent. I went to the store and got a 3 days to pay or get evicted notice and he hasnt paid. Ive been at the court all last week and they are making me jump through hoops only to go back to where i started. I cannot afford a lawyer as I need to pay the mortgage on the house. i know i cant do a “self eviction” kind of deal, but what can i do to make the bum leave. Ive given him almost 400 dollars…..not including him not paying 2 months of rent OR water bill (which is tenants duty to pay). i paid the water bill because he really does have every intention of draggin this BS out and he will literally live there without water and make it filthy……dude doesnt have money, friends or anything to his name….ive been thinking of “creative” ways to scare him out. i was thinking of telling him the house is going into forclosure or something….i dunno anything will help and those “public assistance” lawyers are just as bad as the courthouse….PLEASE HELP!!!
i mean the dude was gonna like crap in the toilet and never flush kinda thing…like i said the courts are giving me the run around and its going nowhere.
example:Ive filled out forms and then i go to another person who tells me i need to fill out this form first. I fill out that form and then the person i talked to tells me i need to fill out this instead. The same guy told me 3 different things…

Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is figure out HOW to fill out the papers to evict this guy properly. I am sure it can be frustrating, but if you were to falsely tell him the house is going into foreclosure, that isn’t going to be enough to get this guy out. If it is going into foreclosure, he would probably think he has another year to live rent free til the bank comes and slaps the sheriff notice to vacate on the door. Also, he wouldn’t care because he would think since YOU aren’t paying the mortgage, why should he pay you anyways, and if you are letting the property go, what do you care what shape it is in? See? Not a good plan.

Only plan is to either talk with legal aid (which you said isn’t helpful) but it seems as though if you are going to be a landlord, you really need to learn the ins and outs of such and one of them is knowing how to legally evict when necessary.

He has passed his 3 day pay or quit and will remain there until the sheriff comes and tells him he has an hour to get his *** out.

How do I sue my landlord for self help eviction and file lis pendens in Wisconsin.?
My landlord sold the house I live in ten days after accepting my one year lease. There is no sale clause, just basic one year lease.

Initially she promised a return of all monies, and covering my moving expenses. I found a place and she refused to return any money. Did I mention she has $5000 of my money?

I only occupied residence for 28 days and in a temporary manner, I would have stayed per my rights, but just moved from a evil landlord and I could tell she was basically immoral. Unfortunately I didnt learn this til after loease…

Anyways, over the last couple weeks we have been in negotiations, I have realtors calling me etc. They close on Tuesday july 6th 2010. I received a letter that my lease is terminated immediately on grounds of unkept grass and a boat in the driveway. both grass and boat was taken care of 3 weeks ago. Lawn was never bad and there is no specific language in lease regarding items in driveway.

Landlord performed a self help eviction and changed the locks refusing entry. Also disconnected power and relocated items in fridge to realtors office.

I am aware of my rights and reminded all parties involved realtors, sellers etc that this is illegal and i am hiring a lawyer. They continued to proceed with the constructive eviction regardless of my lawsuit threats.

Icing on the cake! realtor acted as seller’s authorized representative and performed a moveout inspection etc and hired the locksmith.

My rent was paid in advance, I never received any notices or complaints, and lawn was never overgrown. So my question is

How do i file suit(like what am I suing for exactly) and file the lis pendens. My attorney left on vacation for the 4th and they close on the 6th. To ensure filing of lis pendens before closing I would like to do this initial work myself.

when I go to clerk of courts I ask for small claims paperwork, and what do I put for lawsuit etc? just self help eviction or wrongful eviction? I have a complaint filed with DATCP and local sheriffs department. Once pending lawsuit is filed, I believe I take this paperwork to the county’s register of deeds or land office and apply the lis pendens?

    Thank you

You sue for unlawful eviction. You can’t legally file a lis pendens, you must not understand what that is. That is for when you have a claim to own the property, renters have no ownership rights, making a lis pendens impossible, you have no claim to the title of the house.

How do I file lawsuit against landlord for wrongful self help eviction?
My local clerk of courts in manitowoc county wisconsin have small claims paperwork.

it gives you choices for reason of claim.

    replevins
    eviction,
    return of property etc

Normally the eviction choice is used to evict someone, but do i use this choice when suing for wrongful eviction?
she changed the locks removed my stuff when there is no violations nor proper eviction process. This is a civil matter in small claims.
I understand what replevins means etc the only choice that seems to make sense is for money return, but eviction seems possibly appropriate.

My landlord performed a self help eviction and is in vioation of many laws. My losses are over $5000 what next?
I was not in any violation, landlord sold house and new buyers did not want new tenants. In wisconsin lease goes with the house.

Landlord is liable for double damages, but this would bring us well over $5000. I understand evictions from the Landlord side do not have the $5000 cap, but what about from my angle?

Total money out of muy pocket for deposits and rents are $5000, damges seeked is 2-4000.

Attorney wants a $1000 retainer and i do not have money due to $5g tied up.

Di I file two seperate lawsuits or is one permitted?

There’s higher caps if you take it out of small claims court. Some courts have a landlord/tenant division which offers higher caps than 5k. Your biggest mistake was actually moving out, by law, the new owners would have had to let you finish your lease or buy you out of it.

Be careful your lease doesn’t have a subordination of the mortgage clause.
