The Psychological Definition Of Self Esteem And Self Concept
Author: GregFrost
In the area of science of the mind and psychology, the definition of self esteem has many technical variations, but there is an umbrella concept that can adequately explain what self esteem and the concept of the self is actually. In laymen terms, self esteem is how a person measure’s his overall worth and this can be attributed to the sum total of his own gifts and abilities versus his perceived failures. When talking with jargon and terms lime ‘worth’, perhaps you may be assuming that there is some mathematics to the soul; and in this case there is – of sorts. There are established psychological tests and appraisals that allow the psychologist or the therapist to actually measure self esteem. While the numbers will never be accurate there will be scales of measurement and generalities that they can be placed in. About 50 years ago, one social learning theorist named Morris Rosenberg came up with the Rosenberg self esteem scale, which is one of the measuring tools used to assess how much of the potential self esteem in a person is being used as well as how they appraised the ‘self’. Rosenberg believed that worth could be taken on to its literal meaning, that there was some sort of human currency to be measured and this currency, this value, this rate was actually measured by the person himself.
Others argued that self esteem is not something to be placed on a scale, because it was a basic human need, a crucial element in human psychology and the make up of the human personality. Everyone needs self esteem and no one can survive without it. Another camp believes that self esteem is something that is automatic within us, in the sense of the consciousness and the subconscious at work. Of course, when we are talking about self esteem, we understand the processes that lead up to its build up happens in the subconscious, which opens up much more theories of the process of cortical and neural evolution and how it ties in with emotional maturity and processes in the brain that gravitates around personality, character, rationale and confidence.
It is no mystery that all these areas are related, and that the subconscious has a part to play in all of this. To put it simply, the subconscious has always been seen as the director of all human emotions, perceived or not, and self esteem, confidence and assertiveness are large parts of this equation. This is where the idea of the self concept also comes in, as the self concept is how one perceives one self, and this is the neural imprint of their perceived self. This person may be either higher or lower (in image) than the person that is represented in real life. A person with high confidence might project an image of a person that is much better than what they really are, and the confidence makes up for the difference. If you believe you are that good, then others will too.

how can i report in the class this self awareness?
this is the definition.. self awareness is define as an awareness of one’s own personality or individuality. Self oftentimes refers to yourself, myself, himself/herself, oneself, and your own self. this refers to a person in a prime condition, as entire person or individual. awareness is referred to having or showing realization, participation, commitment and knowledge of one’s values development.
but i dont know how to report infront of the class. . please help me. . i need some tips.. .
You can demonstrate self awareness in your report. What constitutes self awareness when speaking in public? Control over your self and the image you project to others through your posture, volume, appearance, clothes, attitude, etc. It’s how salesmen make a sale!
Below is a link that might give you some ideas along this line.
I hope this helps you. Best of luck. : )
Doesn’t ugly classism and sexism shown against Palin prove she exposes their faux elitist self-definition?
Here’s a woman from true humble roots, who took on her own party’s corrupt alliance with big oil in her own state, beat them at their own game, and prevailed to become Governor of the state of Alaska. Now no Alaskan pays either state or sales tax!
All these comments about Sarah Palin being “dumb” just make me laugh–do you all still think the earth is flat, too?
You got to have some smarts to do that, not to mention being pretty damn brave.
Sarah as we see, gets the double whammy of both sexism and classism. It is as much her class status as her female status that makes the elitist lefties crazy.
For all their claims of being for “the little guy”, the left these days only really cares about the amorphous little guy that they can control and patronize. The poor in abstract are fine, because they can be graciously “given” support by the ever-so-enlightened creative class. The grateful poor are ever in fashion.
But blue-collar working people who really don’t want a damn thing from them but to be respected, left alone, and not gutted by the oligarchs? The ungrateful poor, who don’t give a rat’s ass for the benevolence of the Village, and may, perhaps, openly mock them? Them, not so much. Those people have to be destroyed, as they are fucking up the self-congratulatory savior complex of the elite. We ungrateful working class don’t look at them with shining eyes as they try to “elevate” us to their level, because we see them for what they are and say, “You know what? I really wouldn’t want to be you.” Horrors! How dare we!
I do believe in “promoting the general welfare, in some degree of social safety net, in govt and policies that are helpful to “the little guy”. And I believe that one does that by actually consulting that little guy (novel thought!), and giving the average American a voice of his own. But this is not what the current Left believes – not really. Their approach is more of a “Sit down and shut up and allow ME to tell you how I shall help you, and give you a better America.”
Sarah flies in the face of every bit of that. She is not appropriately grateful, or appropriately cowed by their self-evident intellectual superiority. She is not ashamed of her state college roots, her working class sympathies, her hard and insignificant work in some podunk place that happens to be home. She is not ashamed of her averageness, and she is not ashamed of ours. She does not worship at the Shrine of The Benefactors of the Grateful Underclasses. She spits on their Ivy-league noblesse oblige.
Ah yes, State College, where they let in any C-high school graduate, and once there they are as tough or far tougher than any private school and don’t give oneshit whether that student flunks or succeeds…it’s sink or swim time baby. Compare that to the trust-fund babies on legacy admissions to private U’s who have a vested interest to assure every last one of them graduates with a fake “laude” on their degrees.
Wrap all that in tits and a vagina, and she is the elitist left’s worst nightmare. Whether you agree with all her politics or not, she shines a light on the emptiness of their entire construct of who THEY are, and they just can’t stand it.
I say GO, SARAH! That’s my sister, there. I don’t always agree with you, but I GET you. You are us.
Democrat: Now that you remind us of Obama’s comment about putting lipstick on a pig, that really does reveal the elitism of some on the left doesn’t it? It’s as if, other than their private school route, anyone attaining success is not legitimate and in fact a horrible threat to them. Interesting, thanks for verifying the points made.
Nope…she reminds me of Hitler.
What is low self esteem? definition help?
Can somebody point me to a good definition of low self esteem, preferably fro a book.( no encyclopedias please) ( need bibliography as reference). I have been researching but so far have been coming up with symptoms. I need a whole definition. Thanks
low self esteem:
one’s inability to accept himself; one without self; one’s tendency to live unhappily in accordance with principles which he does not understand but values because not to value these principles would introduce him to a reality which, though he senses its existence and its rightness, he fears acknowledging.
is this a acceptable definition of self-pity?
“Self-pity is the psychological state of mind of an individual in perceived adverse situations who has not accepted the situation and does not have the confidence nor ability to cope with it. It is characterized by a person’s belief that he or she is the victim of events and is therefore deserving of condolence. Self-pity is generally regarded as a negative emotion in that it does not generally help deal with adverse situations. However, in a social context, it may result in either the offering of sympathy or advice. Self-pity may be considered normal, and in certain circumstances healthy, so long as it is transitory and leads to either acceptance or a determination to change the situation.”
I was abused and assault physically and emotionally for years by the hands of my wife’s family. We have moved out and now want justice but the police who investigated are friends of the family so nothing done. I am depressed and angry at this…does this sound like self-pity?
Pity for oneself, especially exaggerated or self-indulgent pity.
