How to Write a Reflection in a Science Notebook
Author: Madeline Binder
Throughout your academic career you are going to be introduced to numerous science cources. Each course is going to have different requirements. However, most classes will require you to keep a science notebook or a science journal, particularly when you are conducting field research or when you are completing a research project.
Science JournalsScience journals, also referred to as science notebooks, are data collection tools. They are used to collect notes, data and observations for specific research projects, field trips or experiments. However, they can also be used to document reflections and observations about a scientist’s professional development.
Journal Entries
There are several different types of journal entries that you can make. The most basic journal entry is a data point entry. Data point entries are used to record specific pieces of information about an observation, such as temperature, dimensions or response.
The second type of journal entry that you can make is an observational journal entry. This entry will “describe” something according to your perspective of that object. Observational entries will describe things like colors, textures and positions of one or more objects.
The third type of journal entry that you can make is a reflection entry. A reflection entry is subjective to your experiences. These entries are used to document a field experience or to to document what you were thinking and feeling when working on a research project.
How to Write a Reflection Entry
There are several basic steps for writing a reflection entry. To start with you need to enter basic identification data. This includes the date of the entry, the time of the entry and a topic for the entry, also called the entry subject or title.
The next step is to create an explanation of why the entry is being made. You can start by explaining what you are doing and then move on to what prompted to you make a reflection entry in your science notebook. For example, you may have heard something on the news that explained certain contradictory data that you collected, or you may have witnessed extraordinary animal behavior in the field that relates to something that you are studying.
When writing a reflection entry you need to provide both facts and feelings. The facts will be used to open your entry, while your feelings and observations will be presented in the middle of your entry. Finally, you will conclude with your entry with some call to action. For example, you may make a note that you will need to test a new solution ratio or you may need to make adjustments to the temperatures of the test environment to see if it will produce the desired outcome.

Where can I find an English Grammar?
I am doing a project for my Professional Development in Computer Science class and I am doing a program that involves marking up the parts of speech of the natural language (English in this case), but I was having problems finding a complete English grammar. I was wanting a grammar in the Chomskian form that shows the breakdown of a sentence into NP (noun phrase) and VP (verb phrase) and so on and so forth. I have only been able to find fragments of it, and not an entire grammar. The fragments contain part, but leave out parts like composite nouns and prepositional phrases. If anybody has an idea where I can find this or have a book they could refer me to, that would be tremendously appreciated. Thanks.
I like the book English Grammar for Dummies. It’s very interesting/informative.
Will there be any jobs for those with a computer science degree?
Microsoft is going to lay off about 5,000 people starting this month to sometime next year. It is also going to let go IT professionals and those from research and development department. Is it possible that the company would include those with computer science degrees? Just wondering.
I don’t want to go back to the medical field if I couldn’t find a job once I get my computer science degree.
The answer is a definite maybe. As a Professor of Business and business owner of over 20 years, and having done lots of hiring over the years, there is and will continue to be a tremendous demand for people with Computer Hardware and Software knowledge regardless of your degree. Remember, that textbooks are at least two years old, after the writing, editing and publishing, so they are by definition obsolete. What about your Professors? Are they working in the field or are the Ivory Tower type, who haven’t had a “real job” in twenty years or more? If you have up-to-date knowledge and experience you will definitely be in demand. If you lack experience, go volunteer, do an internship, etc. to gain the experience that will be required of you.
As a business owner, I want to know what you can do for me. Do you have your “ticket punched”? That is the degree which will get you through the door. But, can you actually be of use to me and generate more income than you cost? Or, am I going to have to devote lots of hours and lots of money to train you? Who would you rather hire?
To summarize: Get up-to-date and Get the Experience! Good Luck!
What’s the best approach to becoming a professor with a professional, research-focused doctorate?
I am obtaining a DPA, a doctorate in public administration – a degree that focuses on management, policy research, and program development. I wish to eventually teach political science, a field in which most professors possess a solid theory-based PhD in Political Science, Int’l Relations, or Public Policy that is more about research for the sake of contributing to the field than to pragmatically improve services offered by an organization. Any tips on making myself more marketable to academia?
You need to publish in peer reviewed journals. You’ve got to prove that you are capable of starting and sustaining a solid research program. Many unis won’t want to hire a doctorate when they have the option of hiring a Ph.D. And there are many more Ph.D.s in poly sci then there are available academic jobs (true for just about every field with the exception of actuarial science).
Another thing that you can do is to make lots of connections with companies/organizations. A well connected member of the faculty could be an asset to a department. You could sell yourself as the candidate would has connections that could help students land high profile internships.
Get great letters and follow all application requirements. In this climate it would help to be a US citizen or already have a visa. It costs a lot of money to sponsor a non-citizen and many schools just don’t have the money for that right now.
Having an excellent teaching record would bolster your application, too. But most of your competition would have that as well.
One risky option would be to obtain an adjunct or visiting professorship at a school and absolutely shine in every way. Then when a tenure-track position opens up at the school apply. A few schools might be willing to hire an adjunct or VAP who proves that he or she is a great fit for the school.
Hiring decisions are made almost solely on research potential because it is important that the candidate be able to obtain tenure. The best way to overcome the prejudice against your doctorate is to prove that you already have a solid research program.
But are you sure that you really want to be in academia?
One of the reasons that Ph.D.s are hired is that unis are “more about research for the sake of contributing to the field than to pragmatically improve services offered by an organization” to use your words. That is exactly the philosophy of universities. If you are into that scene then you likely won’t be very happy in academia. It may be that your colleagues won’t appreciate your work in the way that you would desire. When you are up for tenure the opinions of these people are vital.
If you were interested in teaching at community college any education above a Master’s would be an advantage for you.
Good luck in finishing your degree and finding your dream job.
Which degree would you choose?
Which degree will get me the furthest? Which degree would benefit me the most in the world? If you could add some jobs that I would be eligible with that specific degree it would be greatly appreciated.
