Do you have any suggestions on long term positive thinking?
I just finish Russell Simmons book “Do You!” It was awsome. I was very inspired by it. I’ve also started reading “The Secret” Both books stresses the power of positive thinking and the mind being very powerful. I’ve trying to be positive and so far it’s going pretty well. I’m just afraid that it want last long. I guess that’s a negative thought I shouldn’t be thinking. =) I was looking for some advice on how to have long term positive thinking and having a positive attitude. I’m trying to recondition mind and the way I think. Any good tips?
having a positive attitude and think positively is not about all positive thoughts all the time. it is about changing negative ones into positive ones. it is about looking for the proverbial silver lining. look for something good no matter how small in everything.
write down or recall the good things that happened to you during the day. granted you need some time to write them but if you write them it makes it more concrete and gives you something to look back at if you are feeling negative.
try to be around other people who are trying to keep a positive attitude because it will make it easier for you to be positive.
remember every day is a journey. if you start getting a negative attitude and focusing on the negative in situations try to turn it around. be gentle and loving toward yourself and realize it is a work in progress. some days it is easier to be positive than others. also, some people seem to be optimistic naturally whereas for others it takes more work.
they say the more you try not to think of something the more you will think of it. if you try not to think negative thoughts you might find yourself having lots of negative thoughts. allow them to be that is be aware of them say that is a negative thought. but then look for the positive in the situation.
some examples: negative situation: a fight with a loved one. the positive side: it lead to a good conversation and increased understanding. negative situation: cannot find a job. the positive side: able to spend some time with family who live far away without having to worry about fitting it in around one’s work schedule.
best wishes!
Do you believe in the power of “Positive Thinking”?
When life gets you down or you face some problems, do you think that a positive attitude is what will get you through the day?
@ warpedhy…: i am sorry i have to disagree with u on this one, people whom u describe should be the ones clingling to positive thinking at least that Allah swt will not leave them and things will get better with their hardwork.
Most definitely, the attitude with which we approach anything in this life has a significant bearing in its outcome.
Self doubt can be a very destructive attitude and is never productive, in fact it could be said that it is counter productive.
To doubt ones self, is to put in doubt everything that you believe in, even your religion.
But as we all experience times of self doubt or feeling down, it is very important to be able to recognise your early warning symptoms and to stop it taking hold of you.
A good exercise when you are feeling one of these downers coming on is to go for a walk and make sure when you walk that you are walking tall.
If necessary pretend you are the queen or king of the world, with your head held high ,shoulders back, and even take longer strides than usual.
Now smile and smile with your eyes as well as your mouth.
Be aware of the people around you and if they return your smile then nod in acknowledgement, soon you will find that your mood begins to alter.
The heavy oppressed feeling of self doubt has lifted and you are ready to move on with you day.
No one is immune from these times when we feel everything we do,say or attempt is ineffectual or worse.
But remember you are worthy, and we sometimes have to experience the dark to really appreciate the light in out lives.
This is because we are only human beings after all,we are not created to be perfect beings.
What is the Power of a Positive Attitude?
If positive attitude is great, why do people choose to adopt a negative attitude instead?
dancingdoll says “people do not have control on their brains, hence negative attitude” then he suggests you read “The Power of Positive Thinking” which is exactly the opposite!
However…people DO have control over their thoughts (which I think is what he meant by brains). After all, you create every one of your thoughts. They don’t come from outside you, you make them up. And if you want to change how you think, you can.
The “power” of positive thinking/attitude is in what you give your mind to work on. Think positive thoughts, and your mind works on solving your problems and living your life in a positive way. (Conversely…think negative thoughts and you give your mind negative ideas to use in solving your problems and living your life. Which wold you rather have? Positive…or negative? Your choice!)
Why do people choose negative over positive? Well, remember that all human behavior is not caused by the past but is directed toward the future. We do/think/feel things IN ORDER TO affect our own personal future. We seek a goal, a result, a pay-off from our behaviors. Some people look for negative pay-offs in life, just as others look for positive results.
Now…if you want to control your thoughts and create a more positive mental attitude for your mind to work on…use the “4-S Method” to control your thoughts and feelings:
1. Stop sign — When you sense a thought you don’t want in your head, in your imagination hold up a huge red stop sign, perhaps being held by a stern-faced crossing guard!
2. Shout it out — Shout at the thought, scream at it, curse at it, yell at it (all in your mind, of course!) until you can sense that it is leaving your mind. (The nice thing about the mind is that it cannot contain more than a single conscious thought at a time.) Treat it like an intruder in your mind, someone you DO NOT want in there! Get angry at it!
3. Substitute — Have handy a sentence or thought to put in the place of the unwanted thought. Make it something strong, something positive, something you really want to believe! (Some people carry such positive or self-encouraging thoughts with them, on 3 x 5 cards.)
4. Sustain — Keep at it. YOU CREATED THE UNWANTED THOUGHT FOR A REASON! (“Psychology of Use” says you think all your thoughts in order to get something from them!) As you kick the unwanted thought out the front door, it will turn around and try to sneak in a window or down the chimney! DON’T LET IT!
Keep repeating the four S’s until you find yourself to be in charge of the thought you don’t want. As you become more comfortable with this, you’ll find you are more in control of your whole mind, and also of your feelings.
By next week at this time, you will be more in control of your thoughts and feelings. (If not, you will have chosen not to, and to continue thinking as you do. It’s your choice.)

Research on positive attitudes and health outcomes – prevention of disease, survival, etc?
I’m a Dietitian — always touting the power of positive attitude. I KNOW I have read research on attitude and health outcomes but I am having such a hard time finding any actual research cited online. I would like to find articles to provide to my patients. Can anyone help??
how can you develop your MIND power better by changing your ATTITUDE towards people and things to positive?
and how to let go of past resentments and angers?
is this what is wrong most of the time with people who are angry?
they are thinking people are wanting to take advantage of them or compete with them and vice versa?
why so many think this way and how to change this to what?
which attitude is better and how makes person different after?
please explain and describe
thanks for your answwers!
and how to let go of past resentments and angers? I have learned that when people hurt your feelings it is only important unless you insist on remembering it. Forgive (not forget) Let it go, it is not easy to not remember what people have done to you but keep in mind people make mistakes all of the time. We do stupid things and most of the time at the worst moments that you can imagine.
is this what is wrong most of the time with people who are angry? They are misunderstood/believe they are and are not being heard/understood.
they are thinking people are wanting to take advantage of them or compete with them and vice versa? Sounds more like paranoia to me than anything. But that is low self-esteem issues. As far as competing. You could very well be a competitive person by nature. I know I am.
why so many think this way and how to change this to what? Because that is all they know/ been taught by family, friends, etc not necessarily verbally but by watching how they respond to situations and have not been retrained in their ways of thinking. You can change this by taking it one person at a time and one situation at a time. Force yourself to think the exact opposite way of how you normally would.
which attitude is better and how makes person different after? Being positive is great.. Not always able to pull it off, but if you look at a situation think of oh say a woman walks by a guy who smiles at her. Think of why is he smiling. Did he have something good happen to him? Is he up to something? Is he flirting? Is he just being nice? Which is most positive? You do not know exactly because you are not a mindreader. Which one would you choose and why? He may very well have just decided to be nice to someone while he is trying to make himself a better person. Maybe he had been told he needs to smile more.
