Guiding Principles of Writing a College Personal Statement

Author: Alice Shown

A college personal statement offers a great opportunity for a student to secure admission in a reputed college or educational institution. From start to finish, the statement should be engrossing so as to impress the admission officer and distinguish the applicant from a host of others.

Common Errors in a College Personal Statement

Some common errors that occur while writing a personal statement are:

* Indecision regarding aims and objectives

* Inability go gauge one’s strengths and weaknesses

* Careless language errors

* Lack of patience to think seriously about long term growth and development objectives

* Ineffective or incomplete articulation of key points in the personal statement

How to Enhance your College Personal Statement

Being thorough about your aims, interests and key strengths is the first step to enhancing your college personal statement. If you can provide specific instances or examples of your intellectual and creative prowess, that too would augment your description about your key achievements, personal objectives, career aims, interests and hobbies.

Another factor is to clearly mention the reason for applying for a particular program in a college or institute. This will demonstrate your sense of understanding and clarity of purpose regarding growth prospects in education and career. Simply put, a college personal statement enables an applicant to showcase his/her best traits and prospects.

Typically, an admission officer judges the potential of an applicant by reading the college personal statement. It offers an overview of the applicant’s attitude towards education, career and future growth. To impress an admission officer, your college personal statement must formulate clear goals that enable him/her to draw meaningful deductions from it.

Showcasing Your Potential Through a College Personal Statement

A college personal statement is an opportunity to showcase your potential. In case of a general statement, the applicant has the freedom to choose what to write. At times, applicants are directed to respond to specific questions. This practice is commonly followed in business and graduate schools. In such cases, the applicant must be specific and take care not to stray from the topic.

A compact and concise college personal statement would keep the admission officer absorbed and interested. So, convey your personal goals, demonstrate a positive outlook and refrain from highlighting negative points of any particular situation.

Have you ever hired a professional life coach? What would you look for in Coach as I am starting my practise?
Coaching is a simple yet effective form of personal development where client and Coach create an alliance that promotes and sustains the client’s personal growth and competence.
This powerfull relationship enables the client to give up who they are for who they want to become. Those aspects of the ‘present’ person that the client might want to lose include doubts and fears, and any other thoughts, feelings and beliefs that stand in the way of living a free and purposeful life.
Many of us have big plans about who we want to be and what we want to become, yet actually do anything about it. Some of us are successful in our own terms but still find a feeling of emptiness inside ourselves. Life without purpose is hardly a life at all. Hence, that feeling that something is missing, or the big question of why we are here.
The Coach aids the client in finding what is important and helps to create a purposeful life.

Could someone help me rewrite my resume?
What do you think? I think I have too much info. I’m having a hard time deciding what stuff to leave out. I want to keep it within one page. MS Word resume templates don’t give you much space.

Please revise my 5 paragraph essay that’s about me!
This is for my english com 1 class I just need it revised! Thanks so much. This is a college paper.

A person needs to achieve certain goals in life before they can call themselves successful, and well I want to become successful. I have set certain goals I would like to achieve in my lifetime. Some of these goals are professional while others are personal. My professional goals in life are to get a good education, find a good job that makes me happy, and find a job that makes enough money for me to support my family, and my future family and of course graduation from college. Now I’m going to college I can now achieve some of my personal goals in life as a student at The Art Institute of Philadelphia.
Personal growth, success in the media arts and animation field is a new life adventure for me as a student attending college. I really want a job in video game development; this is my all time big career dream. Playing video games is what drew me into this career choice. You may find this hard to believe, but I believe playing video games was the first step for my career. My next big step would be making them. I know the industry is growing, and the job opportunity well never fade.
I believe my job fields require a descent education. If I don’t have an education I would not be able to function properly at the work place and I would not understand what to do. To maintain a good job that will make good money will require me to go thorough schooling and training. Education is the first and foremost way to become successful, the job I choose need a good college education.
I expect my education in media arts and animation will really help me bring all my thoughts and ideas to life with the right training. Doing something that I love and that would be fun is a huge part of life to me. My happiness in what I do is a goal for me in my life. I see myself as a top performing employee in a well established organization, like video game development itself. I plan on enhancing my skills and continuing my involvement in related professional associations. Once I gain additional experience, I would like to move on from a nominal position to management.
One day I want to become a CEO of my very own video game company and still produce my ideas through the experience that I will gain in my education in media arts and animation. In the society that we live in now, having a college degree is very important to me. So far so good, I love my major. It’s everything that I expect it to be and more. All my classes are well put together and I never got to the point where I just want to give up, I like pushing myself to the limits. It’s brings out who I’m truly am, and it help me realize what my weaknesses are so that I may work on them.

Why do non-liberals feel they can speak for liberals?
Should I start speaking for conservatives since I know what they are really thinking more than they will ever admit to, as well?

I’ll bet the rest of the country would love to hear how conservatives want to institute virtual slavery through personal debt by allowing inflation to outpace the growth of wages.
Edit: This is not a rant. I want to know why conservatives can’t let liberals speak for themselves, especially in questions that specifically addresses liberals.

    • Anonymous says:

Is this more of a rant than anything else? Have we forgotten that it was the liberals “lets give everyone, despite their credit worthiness, money and see what happens” Not saying that is the sole reason we are in hard economic times, but it played a large part.

Can we hear your take on the “virtual slavery”?

Modification: Liberals do speak for themselves, but 9/10 times what they have to say makes little sense. Take our fearless leaders for example. Who was the last president that left or right that went to other countries apologizing for what we did in the past? NEVER! It has never happened and should not have happened. Once again, you have not filled us in on how the right are wanting to institute virtual slavery.
