Personal Narrative Essay And Sample Format

Author: Kevin Woodward

Narrative essay is simply a personal story, and we all have at least a few of these to tell. Sometimes plays and movies have a narrator, a person who stands to the side and tells his or her story. The narrator describes actions as well as thoughts and feelings. For the purpose of this lesson, you are the narrator. The story you choose to write will be your narrative essay.

Narrative essay is boring unless the reader can truly “see” the events taking place and feel why they are significant. Descriptive language includes adjectives and adverbs (describing words), but also figurative language. Figurative language is language that creates images through comparisons or suggestions, such as metaphors and similes. Figurative language can be very effective in portraying people, scenes, and events.

The narrative essay is written in the first person viewpoint. Because this is your story, you can pepper it with the words “i,” “me,” “my,” and “mine.

Personal narrative essay are to help you understanding how to write this type of essays. Strategic aim is to provide a professional essay writing help for school, college and university students. For instance, i have kept a personal journal of my thoughts, ideas, and activities in my life for at least. I usually begin mine by setting a scene that is stark and colorful and I place myself in it.

Personal narrative essay formats are presented here in a good way, and students may get the essence of all this with ease.

Personal narrative essay format

Paragraph #1-The Introduction

1. Begin with an attention grabber that captures your reader’s interest.

Ex: Sometimes it takes something terrible to realize what is important in life.

Paragraph #2-4 Body Paragraphs-Your story.

  1. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence. Begin this sentence with a TRANSITION that show the order that the events occurred (First, Later, In the end, Second, Third, etc.) and the details of your story.

Examples:

The day first began like any other day.

Later that day, my sister began to feel worse and my family and I began to worry.

After a day of much distress, my sister finally began to feel better.

  1. This is where you tell your story. Just like any story you read, you need to make sure to have a clear beginning, middle, and an end. Make sure to describe people and places involved with vivid details.

Paragraph #5: The Conclusion

The Conclusion is just as important as the Introduction; It is the last impression your reader will get of your story.

  1. Begin by re-stressing the importance of your thesis. Be careful not to use the same wording.

Example: Although the day my sister fell ill was a horrible day for my family, it made us all realize how important we are to each other.

  1. Summarize the basic events of your story.

Reflect on the larger meaning or importance of the experience described. Basically, what was the point of your story? Explain the new understanding and why/how this experience or event has a permanent effect on you.

The essay will be different for every student who writes it. We each have our own goals and our own definitation of personal growth.

My suggestion is to take a long hard look at yourself when you started college (or now, if you are just starting) and then think carefully about what kind of person you aim to be at graduation. Educated, mature, professional, independant?

what do you think about this personal change and growth essay?
does anything need to be changed this is in chronilogical order and my teacher wants it this way anthing do i need to change? grammer?

Change and growth is a very important factor in a person’s life. People are constantly changing and growing. Weather they are changing from a loss or a gain. This can be a very important factor in a person’s life. The decisions in our life define what kind of person we are.
When I was 10 years old I cat an Abyssinian cat named Tony. I loved being around him and playing games with him. Day, by day Tony seemed to be gaining more weight. Tony would just sit on the couch when I came home from school, doing absolutely nothing. Therefore, my dad and I took Tony to the veterinarian. “Tonys heart is failing, he is a very ill cat” stated the veterinarian, so my dad and I took Tony home and hoped for the best. The next day I had came home from school, I saw my mom and she had looked upset, I knew Tony had passed away, I was devastated and had no idea what to do.
When I look back at Tony’s death I realize that he was not a major part of my life, however I will never forget it. I now realize that Death is just a part of your life that you are going to experience it at one point or another, and you have to learn to deal with it. It has been weird with my cat not being around but I have adjusted to it. I am doing just fine now without Tony.
Tony’s death reminds me of the song “Open Arms” by Journey. “Living without you, living alone, and this house seems so cold with you, wanting to hold you, wanting you near me.” This song reminds me of how much I miss Tony. I am living without Tony and this house seems so cold without him. Sometimes I just want Tony near me and I just want to see him.
I had learned a valuable life lesson through this experience. I learned that nothing last forever. Loss is just a part of life. In life you have to be strong and prepared. The strongest in life will die and the weakest will survive.

“People are constantly changing and growing. Weather they are changing from a loss or a gain.” should be “People are constantly changing and growing whether they are changing from a loss or a gain.”

“The decisions in our life define what kind of person we are.” should be “The decisions in our lives define what kinds of people we are.”

“I cat an Abyssinian cat named Tony” should be “I had an Abyssinian cat named Tony.”

“Day, by day” does not need a comma. Neither does the next sentence.

This is just a recommendation, but I would change “Therefore, my dad and I took Tony to the veterinarian.” to “My dad and I were concerned, so we took Tony to the veterinarian.” or something like that.

““Tonys heart is failing, he is a very ill cat” stated the veterinarian, so my dad and I took Tony home and hoped for the best.” should be ““Tony’s heart is failing. He is a very ill cat,” stated the veterinarian. My dad and I took Tony home and hoped for the best.”

“The next day I had came home from school, I saw my mom and she had looked upset,” should be “When I came home from school the next day, I saw my mom and she looked upset.”

“When I look back at Tony’s death I realize that he was not a major part of my life, however I will never forget it.” should be “When I look back at Tony’s death I realize that while he was not a major part of my life, I will never forget him.”

“Death” should not be capitalized in the next sentence. The word “it” after “experience” is not necessary, either. There should be a comma after “but” in the next sentence.

There should be a comma before “and I just want to see him.”

“I had” should be “I have.”

“Nothing last forever” should be “nothing lasts forever.”

I don’t understand the very last sentence.

I hope this helps, and I’m sorry to hear about your cat.

In simplest terms I would say: it’s where you are as a person.

When you were very young you might like to play tic-tac-toe, and now you don’t. Why?
      Because your perception has changed.

Now apply this to anything you do and this determines where you are in personal growth.

When you have a family you find you really like playing tic-tac-toe w/ you son or daughter. Why? You already know how to play? Because your sharing your time showing them something fun (to them) makes you happy as a parent. You’re connecting to them and not so much as who wins.

Later in life you see your children playing the game w/ their children and see their connection to each other and just having a good time w/ each other. You see where they are.

This is why I say; it’s where you are as a person. Some people stop changing and learning as people. Some people grow every day, no matter the age.

This is how I view it, good luck on the essay and I hope this helps.

IF U WOULD HAVE TO WRITE AN ESSAY ABOUT HOW U CAN ACHIEVE PERSONAL GROWTH IN UR LIFE..WHAT WOULD U WRITE ABOUT?
perhaps, your opinions can give me some ideas in what topic I could choose to do mine.

It is approximately a 5 page essay, so it has to be something that you can write a lot about.

    I appreciate your answers. =)

You have to live though struggles in life and come out ahead. Without struggle we cannot grow. By being content, we cannot grow mentally because our minds become stagnant. Struggle and depression followed by happiness and self awareness is the key to growing.
