Personal Development for Smart People (book and audio)

Sources of Happiness

During this current age where depression, anxiety, angerness, lack of tolerance and much more related symptoms are very common among peoples, I always think of happiness. I think that happiness is a feeling rather than a thing that we need to borrow or to snatch it from some other person. Feeling depends on the sensitivity of a person so it varies from an individual to another. If there are shops which sell happiness then it must be one of the most expensive product of this century.

In spite of frustration and negative approach we need to find out the sources of happiness and to rise the sense of its feeling in us. Good relationships, helping poors and needy peoples, believe in religion, visiting attractive places, money, purposeful life, positive thoughts are the sources of happiness. I analyzed that all above factors contribute in giving happiness to many peoples belonging to different casts, religions and races.

Does my Character sound like a Mary Sue?
Okay so I’ve been writing a story and like every writer, well most I try my best to avoid falling into the ‘Mary Sue’. Since Mary Sue’s are mostly always better versions off their creator I’ll write about myself first then my character to let you see if this character is a Mary Sue
So I have blue eyes, brown hair, Irish, small and off average weight. I’m bubbly, easy-going, clumsy, quite smart, emotional, caring and kind off passive.
Now my character’s name is Samantha Brody, she is 16 when the story begins. She is petite, has brown eyes and hair. Her mother is Catholic and her father is Jewish. She likes to embrace her roots and likes to learn about both religions. She has practiced in martial arts since she can remember. She is quick-tempered, confident, quite aggressive, independent, loyal to friends and family, can’t trust easily and comes across as a bitch to the people she doesn’t know. She is quite the flawed character, which is fun as I can write about her personal development, and how certain situations and people affect her. I can write more if I haven’t gave enough detail, but so far what do you think about this character?
Maybe I should have clarified more on this character. Yes she is a bitch, but that’s at the beginning and I didn’t say people liked her or that her friends liked the way she acted. But her friends understand this character and know why does what she does. And actually there is at least one character in this story who doesn’t like Samantha and whose opinion actually does matter. But one of the main themes off this story is Samantha growing up, she is after all only 16 and is still finding herself. And yeah the ‘cant trust easily’ thing is cliché, but I’ll look into that. Thank you for your opinion though, it kind off made me look at my character without being biased so :D

I think she’s got an awful lot of labels, and some of them don’t make a whole lot of sense when combined.

Good martial artists have tempers a mile long. They have to – lose your temper in a martial arts bout and land a blow at anything approaching full force and that’s you disqualified. (I’m assuming that “as long as she can remember” means she’s doing something like karate or judo which have strict rules and are therefore safe for small children, not MMA.)

And then we get the classic Mary Sue combination of “can’t trust”…”oh except for her friends and family”. Why would she only come across as a (whatever) to people she doesn’t know? If you behave like a prat, you behave like a prat. Unless your friends are as shallow and unpleasant as it comes, behaving like a prat to strangers isn’t going to be endearing to friends either. But Mary Sue does it all the time, normally because the writer wishes she could get away with it but doesn’t dare.

If your character is a jerk then people will see her that way whether she knws them or not. Only Mary Sue behaves like a jerk and everyone who matters to her thinks it’s cool. Think about that. Your character’s behaviour (and that includes the way she presents herself to others) needs to have realistic consequences.

Hi could anyone of you smart people help me check this….?
Could anyone see if i have Explain how character development and environment in animation communicate with audiences; and whether i took
basic metaphor, semiotics and classical narrative and hero’s journey as the points of discourse.

    (Introduction

According to the words from Christopher Vogler and The Writer’s Journey Mythic Structure for writers Third Edition the Hero describe the central character of either sex who sacrifices his own need for others and Ultimately goes through a change of personal identity. She/he possesses Human qualities of being born and having to learn and seek a universal truth about his life in which the audience can identify. By analyzing the 2003 DreamWorks animated movie Sinbad legend of the seven seas, we can know more about the hero and how he has to go through the psychological task of transforming from the bounds and illusion of his alter-ego into the well-rounded hero that the audience recognizes.

    SEMIOTICS
Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas tells The story around the character Sinbad who has to Journey to a magical land of chaos to retrieve legendary Book of Peace, a mysterious artifact that protects the land from chaos, after being framed for stealing it by the goddess eris. He must retrieve it back before the impending deadline or his friend prince proteus (who have sacrifice himself in Sinbad place) will be executed.

As movie takes around place in Persian myth as environment is Persian/Greek related. Since the movie calls for The story of Sinbad to revolve around the character Sinbad who travels with his crew on a voyage around the seven seas they are Therefore signified as typical out-going pirate stereotype.
In the movie The Character of Sinbad has become very complicated one, He starts out as a 2 dimensional archetype of a hero that was told back in the old times of Aristotle and after his called for adventure he becomes to grow, learn, seek and fail and ultimately become a true hero. He is the kind of person who would not sacrifice for others as he is reluctant in retrieving the book even when everyone is counting on him. Because of this archetype he is signified as an outlawish character.
He travels around on his ship and His adventures personality also signifies his ego. Also adding to Sinbad’s character is his life of thievery which makes his personality more adventures and free spirited this is contrast with his best friend prince proteus who is not free spirited and his environment signifies this character upbringing and personality of having to live a life of discipline and order. Also The character development of the villainess Eris signifies a sadistic femme fatale who is constantly in sinuous motion fitting into her environment the realm of chaos. The movie begins with Sinbad trying to steal the book from a prince proteus ship which heading to the palace for celebration. Loud action music is the signifier for the call for adventure as Sinbad fights with the crew from that ship to steal the book. After saving the prince from a sea monster He was invited to the celebration. The book of peace is the sign of life and bringing it to the palace signifies that the kingdom will live in joy and prosperity and when the villain Eris steals the book peace all the joy and prosperity is gone with it. This tragedy signifies the event of destruction and darkness as the city began to crumble around them and the sky became dark. Technology helps to make the scene even more dramatic as when the moment Eris steals the book the camera angles tilts and loud music are use to create a sense of appending doom.

Having no choice but to retrieve the book or die Sinbad sets sail to the land of chaos. On board he meets the princess marina which to him is a bad thing as she is a woman (sign) inferiority to the manliness of his crew but decided to keep her after she saves the crew from sirens. Sinbad heasd of to the realm having to learn, seek and fail. He returns without the book after failing to furfile villainess test and awaits his execution. This self sacrificing personality signifies the change that the character has gone through in his journey as he has learned to accept responsibility. The sunsets signifies misery for the whole kingdom as Sinbad awaits his execution but the villainess intervene furious that he has unknowingly furfile her test she gives him back the book. Having gotten back the book signifies that peace is once again set upon the Kingdom. Having transformed into a better person Sinbad sets off for a new adventure into the sun rise a signifier of a new beginning.)

Thanks for helping me and i’ll see that i’ll help you in the future.

Is it possible for someone to be smart enough to get a degree, but not a job?
I know education does not equal jobs. But consider this:

Suppose you met someone who got a Bachelor’s degree with a 3.5 GPA. Most of his classmates regardless of grades found stable jobs after graduation, so the job market doesn’t seem to be the problem. But he’s unemployed even over a year later. He tells you he just isn’t intelligent enough. His field requires a lot of technical skills and sharp thinking, and the need to constantly keep up to date and work on personal development projects even during unemployment. Since he can’t keep up, his job prospects are rapidly declining. “Some people just ‘have it’ and I don’t”, he says.

Do you believe him? After all he did OK in school. Or is there another reason why he can’t find a job? What should he do?

In which fields do you think this could happen? Or where it doesn’t?

    • Arbitrary Person says:

Did he have any internships or relevant part-time jobs as an undergrad? If not, then it’s not surprising no one will hire him. Employers would much rather take the student who has a few years of experience even if that student’s GPA is a little lower.

I don’t see why he can’t keep up with his field during unemployment. Yes not having a job is tough. But he needs to do something to demonstrate that he is working on his skills. When my sister was unemployed, she got certificates in some basic office skills. She was very familiar with using PowerPoint and Word, but she took the initiative to show that she wasn’t just wasting her life sitting around at home.
