Change Management: Organizational Change Management Consulting

Organizational Change Management – Four Truths Leaders Should Know About Organizational Change

There was a time when business operations were stable and change occurred infrequently. Like the Model T Ford, however, those days are history. Dr. John Kotter, who is widely regarded as the Guru of Change Management, states that the rate of change is not going to slow down anytime soon. Many business experts agree with him. They predict that over the next few decades the business environment will become even more volatile. For managers and leaders in business, this means they must be able to both adapt quickly to change and manage it effectively. Maintaining a balance between adapting to change and managing it effectively is difficult for even the most skilled leaders, however. Effective change management can occur when leadership understands four critical truths about organizational change.

1. People do not resist change that they believe is in their best interest. Resistance to change is overstated in business discussions. The fact is we accept change all of the time. The key to our acceptance of change is that we must believe it will be positive for us. This truth means leadership must sell the value of the desired change to organizational stakeholders. Employees and managers will be more receptive to change efforts when leaders communicate the value of the future.

  1. Classy girl says:

    Career Change NEED HELP!?
I have a B.A in Business, and 9 years of experience in a top management consulting firm. I am doing very well in my current position.

I would like to change my career to psychology or counselling. I am 33 years old, I think I have two options:

    1. either I pursue my true passion, which is psychology, and take a Masters in Psychology, although it is going to be a long path, and I am not 100% sure where it is taking me.

    2. I pursue an MBA with a concentration in Organizational Behaviour. But I will have to stay in the business world, and I will always look back and wonder, what IF I had pursued my passion.

I have been thinking about pursuing psychology for the last 6 years, and the idea never faded away. In fact It is now stronger than ever. Is it for real, or is it just a false dream. I am not sure.

    • Morgan says:

Well, this sounds like a hard decision. It’s an especially difficult time to be changing careers, especially if you are not sure it’s going to pay off financially in the end. If you are already financially stable as it is, I would say go after your dream. It’s true, there are no promises. But don’t you think it’s better to have failed then to have never tried at all? Trust me, you don’t want to spend the rest of your years, thinking your current job is “ok, but what if I had purused my dream…?” You’re still young, so why not? Go for it, and with all the messed up people in this country alone, psychology doesn’t seem like a bad field to go into! Good Luck with everything!

      Because more qualified candidates applied.

Because a University of Phoenix degree isn’t very valuable to the academic world. A university of Purdue’s caliber would want to hire someone with adequate education.

Because he included an honorary doctorate as though it’s relevant to anything. (Hint: An honorary doctorate does not imply anything about a person’s abilities.)

About business consulting jobs..MA in Industial and Organizational Psychology or MBA degree?
My major is Economics. After my graduation from University, I worked as an accountant in a multinational company about 2 years. But did not work out for me, I was very busy which was fine for me but it was very routine. Then I went to US and had Management and Marketing diplomas. I really like marketing. After I went back to my home country, I started to work again for a multinational company as PR Specialist. This job was exciting actually but it turned out such a piece of cake for me and there was and is no challenge.
And I’ve been thinking to have a Master’s degree and finally had a chance to start a program. Now I am hover around to concentrate in Marketing or Management Consulting. Marketing is interesting though there is not much opportunity in the city I live, but there are many small businesses need consulting. I also interested in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. SO I need your opinions, really dont know which to choose and concentrate on. I do not want any more career change in my life and want to stick one thing. Besides I want to ask which one is preferable for management consulting I/O psychology or MBA degree?

    Thank you

    • Harumbah says:

An MA in Industrial and Organizational Psychology would be quite specialised and might restrict your choice of future jobs. But specialised skills often command high salaries. Maybe research what sort of demand there is for that skill in the marketplace – large firms, consultancies. Consulting with small firms can be fun and interesting work, but you won’t earn as much and a specialised skill like this may not be in demand – small firms often want far more basic help.

An MBA is by definition a generalised qualification – something to add to an existing solid skillset. Typically, people do an MBA in order to:

      (1) change career direction
      (2) take on a more strategic role
      (3) start their own show
      (4) go into consulting – either working for a consultancy or internally – many firms have this as an internal function too.

An MBA used to carry more status but that has probably reduced somewhat now, as more people have them.

Both worth doing though – good luck!

  4. Eli De Friend Eli says:

Where can I find an ethical management development firm?
I am looking for a management consulting firm that offers consulting on organizational development and sustainable development. Preferably the firm should be able to facilitate the strategy making process and then help the change management process to implement the strategy throughout the organization. This firm should see capacity building and training as a core element to successful roll out of organizational change. I currently only know of the Capacity Building Resource Exchange http://www.caprese.org but I am sure there must be more.
I meant an ethical management consulting firm, of course
