Author: David Patullo
This country is facing a teacher shortage, especially in the elementary schoolteacher. Now is as good of a time to go back to school and obtain your teaching degree online. There are of course advantages and disadvantages to doing this online. This article will look at some of the advantages that are to be had getting your teaching degree online and of course some of the drawback to doing this. Hopefully after reading this article you will have a clearer picture as to the reasons you need to consider your teaching degree online.
If you have wanted to be a teacher, now is as good a time as any to pursue your goals and look into getting your degree online. If you have your degree you may want to freshen up and continue your education. The first advantage to getting your degree online is the convenience factor, lets say that you are a teacher already you do not want to quit your job just to expand your education. The advantage to getting your teaching degree is that you can schedule your classes to fit into your current schedule. Another advantage is that there are several programs and schools out there to choose from, So the choices for you are quite literally unlimited for you. This goes back to the advantage of being able to pretty much name your own schedule as far as classes go.However there are some disadvantages to this as well. One of the disadvantages to this is the fact that you will not have the close environment that you would in a traditional classroom setting. You may feel a sense of isolation and think that you are not able to interact with the instructor as well, which may lead to you not doing as well as you might in a traditional classroom setting.
Another one of the major problems is that you will always have to have high speed Internet. This may or may not sound like a problem, consider this though lets say that you are at home working on your homework assignment. You decide that you will work on it while you have an hour of free time at work, only to discover that there is no access to high speed Internet. This may lead to you turning an assignment in late.
As you can see there are advantages and disadvantages to getting your degree online. However in the end regardless of how you decide to obtain you teaching degree it is important that you remember that the kids are the ones that will ultimately benefit from your decision to get your teaching degree online. The most important thing that you need to do is sit down and weigh the pros vs the cons and try to figure out if an online degree is the way that you want to go. In my experience I have found that getting your degree online is the best option as it allows you to feel more at comfort with your surroundings.

Which is the best school for an online teacher’s certificate course?
My friend wants to do an ATC course online. But she doesn’t know which is the best university to apply to. Does anyone have any idea? Or, are there any other good teaching certification courses avalaible online?
Interesting question. I was going through an Intern Program getting my cert while teaching here in California. It’s a hard way to go because interns get the worst schools because teachers who have picked up a year or three of experience leave pretty pronto to better schools which want the experience.
Getting your cert BEFORE going into teaching is a good idea. I’ll be watching to see if people with the experience you are seeking post here. Good Luck!
How can I become a certified Spanish teacher? Online course preferable.?
I have been thinking about starting my own spanish tutoring business in North Carolina. I speak spanish fluently and would like to have some sort of certification to back it up. I am not sure where to begin. Any ideas? Thank you.
In order to get certified, you have to complete an education program with a student teaching component. That’s the only way to get certified-if you somehow found a program online, no one would take it seriously. If you want to tutor, I’d start small and just advertise your services at local colleges, call high schools and middle schools, etc. As you build your own reputation, you can slowly add more students and begin an actual business from there. You have to start small and work your way up since you aren’t certified. If you still want to get certified, you’ll have to go through the same process as any other teacher. Best of luck!
How is taking an online course different form taking a course in which a teacher delivers lessons?
and assignmnts? what are the challenges of learning online ? what are the advantages? what strategies do you need to help you succeed in this course?
Like so many things in life, the answer to your question should begin with “that depends.”
I will provide my perspective from the real-life experiences of someone who, as an undergraduate and Masters student, took courses online and, as a college educator, created and delivered online instruction.
Regardless of what the pundits or traditional educators tell you, online education is viable and a bona fide channel to learning … however, it is not for everyone.
As a previous respondent mentioned, you must have a strong sense of self-discipline. Second, you must be able to transend the electronic (often considered impersonal) medium and view the online exchange as an alternative … not as a “better or worse” situation.
I believe the other respondents offered good advice regarding the advantages and disadvantages, so I’m frame the remainder of my reply around strategies.
Use the course Discussion Board as well as your peers email as a source for posting questions, clarifying issues, and attending to the objectives and expectations of the course.
Part of the need for self-discipline in online courses is to be sure you not only ask questions but also respond to your peers’ questions and concerns. Beyond the obvious need to be successful with the course -and instructor’s demands- most of your learning will come from the exchange of ideas and information among you and your peers. As such, check in (online) frequently and demand from yourself that you will respond to issues posted as well share information and resources.
Do your best to maintain a polite and professional demeanor online -refrain from engaging in overt and/or unwarranted criticism. Be more of a facilitator of information and success than a barrier.
Because your words are your only representation of you when online, choose your words -and tone- carefully. Take your time, reflect before responding, and have fun!
In my view, online courses are not meant to replace face-to-face on-site classrooms, it’s simply an alternative for those who may not -or can’t- conveniently attend.
Can I take an online cpr certication course if I am a teacher?

NO!!! CPR is a HANDS ON activity.
Online course suggestions for a sub teacher?
I have to take a couple of courses (6 hours) to renew my teaching certificate in Ohio. Any suggestions of good classes for a teacher who mainly just subs?
Good Luck online school takes work and a lot of patience!
