I have a certification for teaching from Puerto Rico can I teach in Maryland or anywhere in the US?
I have a teaching certification from the BOE in Puerto Rico in Elementary with a special emphasis on ESL.
I have a BA is Elem. Ed with emphasis to ESL and a MA in Applied Linguistics in TESL.
Teaching Certification (MD in particular) time frame?
Many thanks.
I have recently completed a 4-year B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Salisbury University. I have been offered and accepted a position in the same school in which I have worked over the past 5 years. I am all ready, except for the certificate. I have sent off my information (certification area, Praxis scores, transcripts, etc.) to the Maryland State Department of Education a few weeks ago. Can anyone (who has had experience either in MD or with another state’s Department of Education) advise me on how long the certification process usually takes until I receive final notification of certification? Just so I don’t keep checking my mailbox constantly this summer.
Hi!
I graduated from Clemson (South Carolina) in 97. It took six to eight weeks, then. But when I went back for my Master’s it only took about five weeks. I know how you feel! It will just feel more complete when it’s in your hands.
Congratulations on graduating and already having a job lined up!
can i take my praxis exam in a different state than the one i’m being certified in?
I’m in grad school in NJ and getting my teaching certification there as well. I need to take the Praxis 2 elementry ed content knowledge test soon. I am not in NJ on the weekends (I’m in Maryland) and since I know they only offer the tests on saturdays, I was wondering if I could take the test in MD even though I’m not in school there or being certified there.
Yes. You can take the exam in New Jersey and request on the form to have the results sent to, I believe, 3 states. I took mine in Philadelphia and I know I had them sent to New Jersey thinking, at the time, that New Jersey had a reciprocal agreement with Pennsylvania. It doesn’t.
will my secondary education teaching certification transfer?
if i get certified to teach in california or florida.. will the certification transfer to other states? will additional training be necessary? particularly between florida, california, hawaii, maryland, virgina, or new york. ANY info you have on the issue will help! thank you!
Each state has its own requirements. Some states have reciprocal agreements and therefore accept each other’s certificates. It will depend what state you choose. You need to contact the state you are moving to.
Thinking about teaching…how to get started?
Hello everyone. Firstly, I have been thinking about teaching science (chemistry) at either the high school or community college level. I have a B.A. in biological science and a recently completed M.S. in chemistry.
I wanted to know if anyone out there knew if community colleges hire M.S.-level instructors, and if there were any good websites or other resources that listed vacancies for teaching in a particular field?
Also, I have a friend who is now teaching science at a private Christian high school. Does anybody know if one has to first get their teaching certificate to teach at a private school versus a public school? I was told that in California (the state in which I currently reside) that it take a year of student teaching before one can get their teaching certification. However, there is a chance I would be moving to the D.C. area (Maryland, Virginia) in 6-7 months and was wanted to know if things were different out there?
Thanks…definitely new to all of this, and need some guidance!
Some additional background:
I have also been applying for a commission in the navy, since joining the navy is something I’ve always thought about doing. But recently I am finding that there is a certain amount of ridiculousness associated with the entire application process to the armed forces. It’s really turned me off of the military, to be honest, and if that is the way things are normally run, I want no part of it.
Teaching was always my 2nd choice, since I enjoy teaching others, I have tutoring and TA’ing experience that I loved, and I enjoy learning. Everybody I know and work with has told me that this is my calling…not the military.
Most private schools require a teaching certificate; however, some will hire you if you are enrolled in a program and plan to graduate. Most states will require one semester of student teaching and another semester of courses in education. An idea you might consider: In most states you can apply for a provisional teaching certificate. You would be able to do substitute teaching or perhaps even be hired full-time for a period of two years in most states. Your best resource: Your local Regional Office of Education. Your next best resource: State Certification office for each state you might consider.
I think you’ll enjoy teaching.
