Is a Life Coaching Career for You?

Author: Milana Leshinsky

Whenever it comes to the career that you are going to choose, you have an almost endless variety of choices that are in front of you.  For some people, however, a life coaching career is one that holds out the promise of something that is very satisfying and at the same time, is going to be able to take care of their material needs as well.  Just because something is going to be available for you does not necessarily mean, however, that you should take part in it.  A life coaching career is one that is going to require a specific type of person if they expect to be able to succeed in it.

The first thing that is going to be required of you if you plan on being a life coach of any sort is that you are going to have to be trustworthy.  Most often, you are going to be working with individuals on a one on one basis and there may be times whenever they need to be able to trust you with very intimate details about their life.  If they cannot have full and complete trust in you as a person, you are not going to be able to succeed as a life coach and to give them what they really need in order to succeed for themselves.

Something else that you may want to keep in mind is the fact that a life coach needs to direct somebody by gently guiding them, not by forcibly pushing them in the right direction.  Most people that come to a life coach will do so because they are trying to build self-esteem for a number of different reasons.  Perhaps they are with you because they want to be better at their work or a healthier individual or perhaps even have a more satisfying family life.  Regardless of why it is that they have come to you, however, they are going to have to make changes to the person they are on the inside or at least allow that person to shine through on the outside.  Unless you can guide them in that direction gently, you will not be able to be successful.

A life coaching career is one that you are going to be taking on out of passion, both passion for people and a passion for yourself and the feeling of satisfaction that it gives you when you help other people succeed.  You need to be able to step into the background and allow the person that you are helping to really shine through as an individual.  Even though it may be your strength that is helping them at first, you must never allow them to feel as if you are in some way stronger or superior to them.  A life coaching career requires somewhat of a humble attitude, but that attitude comes with rewards that are greater than what many people are able to receive with any other job.

I’m at a crossroads of sorts in my career and life – is coaching a good option?
I’ve been talking to the folks at Franklin Covey about a 5 month coaching program, but it’s super expensive – has anyone gone through a similar program – and what are your impressions?

I would find a career counselor first. The Franklin-Covey program is good especially if you’re in sales but if you’re really searching for what’s important to you then you will get a LOT more bang for your buck from a career counselor, or from a privately-hired coach.

I’m interested in the field of life coaching….any suggestions on how to kickstart this career?
I’m not even sure if what I want to be would be called a “life coach”, but I’m extremely interested in helping, guiding and developing success in people’s personal lives and careers. I have a pretty extensive background in sales and sales training/education, but I don’t know how to start a business or career like this on my own. Any suggestions on how to make this career not only a reality, but a successful and lucrative lifestyle?

I chuckle at the “get a coach” response, but that is a great first step. You’d be able to narrow down what you really want to do and start moving yourself towards your goals. Not only that, you’ll start to learn more about what coaching is, how it works, and what it can offer to people.

Aside from that, coaching is a wonderful skill to hone – whether you’re in business for yourself or not. Coaching itself is a skill to be learned and developed, so start reading, taking classes, talking to people, etc. to learn more.

And, don’t feel like you are leaving behind your current skills to embark on this journey. What business owner couldn’t use a sales coach?

      Best of luck to you!

Take classes in psych, and counseling.

But best of all: Offer your services to a younger person and tell them you will be a “big Brother/Sister” to them and get on with the job of LIFE COACH.

      No experience like OJT

How much does a life/career coach cost?
Career coach or a life coach, someone who helps you get going on a new career, business or project.

Well that will depend how much work you require.
Some of my clients cost me highly expensive and some are does not. The expenses made for them has to be paid by them + my service charge and that will all depend as I said. If you are seriosly interested you can easly send me 10$ to make appointment. First sessions would be online. I’ll consider if you can handle my services or not. you can message me from here.

    Life coaching as a career?
Been thinking a lot on being a life coach and I see some online courses but how can I be certain they aren’t fraudulent?

Also are there classes I can take at my local college that will help me to get started?

You should look for courses that have been accredited by the International Coach Federation. Formed in 1995, the ICF is the leading global organization, with over 14,000 members, dedicated to advancing the coaching profession by setting high professional standards, providing independent certification, and building a network of credentialed coaches. A list of these courses can be found in the website I’ve included below.

Coaching is a specialized profession requiring a great deal of presentation and facilitation skills. To the extend the courses in college give you those experiences, then they would be helpful in furthering your life coaching career. I would seek out opportunities to lead and speak in public. The other advice I can give is to take marketing courses in college so you understand how to brand and market yourself as a life coach in the future. Good luck!
