Author: Creztor Tessel

Teaching ESL in Taiwan? Taiwan places great emphasis on English learning and parents send their children to English schools from a very early age. Almost anytime of the year is a good time to look for work if you are an English teacher. What is it really like to teach English in Taiwan? Some teachers pick Taiwan over other countries to teach in because of how easy it is and the qualifications required to be an English teacher are easily met. This doesn’t mean it is easy work with easy pay, but you can make a living teaching English in Taiwan.

Most of the jobs or work teaching in Taiwan is at cram schools. These schools cater classes to children as parents send their children to English classes at a very early age. The majority of the kids are anywhere from six to twelve. Thanks to this, the material taught is usually very easy and basic. Of course there is still work to be found teaching older students, but if this is your first time to Taiwan it will most likely be teaching children.

The requirements to be an English teacher are very easy. You need to have a recognized Bachelor’s degree and you must be from an English speaking country. This means anyone from Canada, the United Kingdom, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa you already meet this requirement.

If you are looking for teaching ESL in Taiwan, then the good news is that almost anyone can teach English in Taiwan today. With any normal Bachelor’s degree and being a native English speaker you will meet the requirement of most cram schools that are looking for English teachers.

What organizations are trustworthy for getting TESOL certification and for placing one abroad to teach ESL?
I just don’t know what I can trust. I look for accreditation, but it’s such a jungle. I don’t want to put money into getting a certificate from an organization that turns out to be nothing more than a piece of paper saying I did it. I want to know if there are any organizations out there that anyone knows are trustworthy and worth it. I’d really like to get certified to teach English abroad (just TESOL/TEFL/ESL type of certification) and to teach, mostly, in South America. I don’t want to be a teacher or have a 4-year teaching degree or anything. I just want to have this experience in my life aside from what I already am going to school for and what career plans I already have.

I took the TEFL Worldwide Prague course last October and have been teaching in Prague since. It was a great course, very thorough and intense but alot of fun too. The trainers are just dynamic. Alot of people from my course stayed in Prague but quite a few went on to teach in several different countries. They have great job guidance with binders filled with current job openings and contacts for English language schools all over the globe. I highly recommend them. http://www.teflworldwideprague.com

I have an M.Ed. and ESL certification. How do I get a decent paying English teaching job in England or Europe?
I have been looking for about a year online, but either I am not eligible because I am an American, or the pay cut would be extreme. I just want to find a reputable high school or college to teach at that allows me enough money to live and maybe travel a little. Any suggestions on schools that will hire Americans?

    • Astray A says:

Well most language schools prefer to hire Europeans for teaching job due to the fact you don’t have visa problems etc. Most ESL teacher are either English or Irish teacher in Europe. They are EU citizens etc, and don’t have to have a work permit to work in other EU countries. Your best best is to try all the private languages schools in Europe etc.

    Help with Teaching Certification?
This might be an obvious question, but I really can’t find (or don’t know where to find) any information on it. Here’s my situation:

I’m graduating soon with my B.A. in English (just English, not English Education), and I want to go on to do my Master’s course work. However, my plan is to broaden my career options by getting my Master’s certificate (with teaching certification) in ESL–English as a Second Language, or Bi-Lingual Ed both at the secondary level. Would this degree certify me only to teach ESL? Or due to my undergrad study in English, would I also be qualified to teach English/Literature?

    Thank you for your help!
