Confronting Project Management Challenges by Adding a Project Management Consulting Firm to Your Team
There are many reasons that corporate executives turn to external consultants to provide project management support for their projects. The challenges that organizations face include: sub-par project performance, the potential for lost credibility, lack of experience with a particular project type, and a lack of internal project management practitioners. Project management consulting firms can supply experienced practitioners that offer high-quality solutions to the complex issues facing project teams.
The following are six ways that project management consulting firms are making a difference with leading organizations.
ADDRESSING PROJECT-RELATED ISSUES
Often times it is the highly visible, at-risk project that drives management to recognize that a better project management approach is required. Frequently, project management consultants are brought in to address various project-related issues including: poor on-time performance (key dates being missed), unsatisfactory financial results (unnecessary expenditures to meet deadlines), dysfunctional team dynamics (poor communication, team in-fighting, and misdirection), and complicated team composition (multi-locational, language barriers, external partnerships, etc).
PROVIDING ADVANCED PROJECT ANALYSIS TO UPPER MANAGEMENTIn many cases, upper management has difficulty evaluating project performance and making the best decisions because they lack visibility to key project information. A project management consulting firm can provide the necessary reports and analysis to equip managers with key information on upcoming obstacles, possible project pitfalls, and potential resource constraints. When this type of information is incorporated as part of a more encompassing project management approach, the consultant can convert standard project data from a reactive snapshot of historical information into a predictive project analysis tool.

how is my my chance of getting recruited at management consulting companies like Mckinsey, bain and co.?
after coming across the fact that the management consultant companies do hire graduates(not only MBAs) in their firms,i saw a ray of hope to change my career according to my dreams. i never intended to do MBA.iam currently studying engineering in information technology,4th year.i have already applied for the post of business analyst and similar post in 12 such reputed post.i also have worked at two different companies while studying to gather experiance.how is my chance of getting recruited at one of those firms?please give me some tips or suggestions for standing a better chance than other candidates.
Let me ask you a question back.. Why are thinking about the mgmt consulting like.. the ones you mentioned there.. I ask this because it is easy to go after the most visible prize without understanding why you want it and then not be satisfied when you get it..
If you really feel that you will be happy at the companies you mentioned (doing any job) then you should court these folks aggressively. The companies would love to have people knock on their doors.. Go to their websites, get contact information, call these chaps.. set up informational discussions with them and discuss their hiring needs. Get contacts .. first step to getting hired.
What experience do you have with consulting firms? What was the “reason” they were brought in?
As businesses grow and change, Chief Strategy Officers and/or Ethics Officers are pinnacle to the ethical soundness of “change.” Change for the sake of change is not always good or enough. Chapter 9 talks a lot about “Ethics as Organizational Culture.” Sometimes, having people who are too intimate in the business operations and strategy (owners = majority shareholders/executive management/board members) fail to see the errors of their ways. They are surrounded by people who share the same “biases” and this can hinder the companies ability to move forward.
Consulting firms are a way of life in the business world these days. They often offer the expertise and “out of the box” creativity that companies need to stay competitive and be innovative. What experience do you have with consulting firms? What was the “reason” they were brought in? What was the outcome of their involvement?
They come in to show the co. how to make more money, by doing short cuts & showing them who is not doing there job or is to slow and BEST OF ALL “FIRE SOMEONE” for a way to “SAVE MONEY”
Becoming a business Tycoon?
what should my second major be? Im already planning on majoring in International Business… I want to start an MIS/IT, Management, Operations Management, Strategic Management Consulting Firm… I want to change the Group into a sort of MOTHER COMPANY or Conglomerate Enterprise and venture into starting a Publications Company that publishes three magazines dealing with Business and Entrepreneurship, Humanitarianism and Global Health, and Luxury and High end electronics….and a Business Hotel/Resort Chain………I probably dont have enough years in my life time to complete all of that but I at least want the plans to do so. I was thinking that MIS or IT would be great to get into. Any suggestions?
Good to be ambitious.
But from my experience, I planned to do something in a way I wanted…as I learned and moved forward with a plan, I realized that whatever I tried to do opened up a million other doors and possibilities for me!
I found my plans constantly changing.
That, actually, is one key to a successful plan. You have to look at your plan and modify it as you move along.
You can plan something today, but you will need to be right on top of it and keep it very dynamic.
It’s good to dream big, but we still have to get there one step at a time.
Good luck.
