Looking for information on self help, personal growth, inspirational, success and motivational books?
Can you tell me the best books of this type you have ever read and let me know what you found most helpful about each book and also anything that you felt the book didn’t do a good job of covering / teaching…or anything you wish the book would have included but didn’t?
Thank you to all who answered so far. My question is more of a research nature…I’ve read many books of this type & am curious to see how many of those titles pop up here. I am most interested in peoples specific feelings about what was most or least helpful in their opinion, or what topics they wish would have been either covered in those books, or more deeply elaborated on. Great book choices given so far…I have read some of these…Thanks again!

The trouble with self-help, motivational books is that they leave a void for the reader to gain momentum on it’s supposed track. It helps getting you motivated but it all goes away after that initial rush.

What worked for me so far is the “Release Technique” and “The Silva UltraMind System”. I also tried this website: stevepavlina.com.

The Release Technique was created by Lester Levenson and is more popularly known as the Sedona Method or marketed under The Abundance Course. It teaches the student to experience that energy/feeling and releasing them.

Silva UltraMind teaches its student about brain waves and the different states of mind, especially the Alpha brain wave.

Steve Pavlina has good articles on his website.

I have combined both the Release Technique and using it on an “Alpha” state of mind, even “Theta” and I found it very useful.

To elaborate, using the Silva Method, one is introduced to at least four brain waves…in the following order: Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta.

The beta brainwave is where we’re at during normal waking hours, when we are most mentally active (and unfortunately when we are most susceptible to stress and mental fatigue). Scientists had measured this to be about 15 cycles on an EEG machine (electroencepalograph)–the machine which measures and monitors brain activity.

The next level below is the alpha brainwave. It’s between 5-15 cycles. This is the state when you’re relaxed….like listening to relaxing music, taking a shower, just before you fall to sleep/right after you wake up. This is when youre subsconscious mind is mostly receptive to suggestions and where you can “plant the good seeds and pull out the weeds in your garden.”

Theta is right below alpha and is characterized by your sleep-state. It’s between 3-4 cycles. Your dreaming at this point. You may experience lucid dreaming.

Delta is deep sleep. It’s between 1-3 cycles. You may not recall having dreamt at all.

Anyway, the Release Technique focuses on simply that–releasing your emotions that you’ve hold on too up to this point, which makes you feel lighter and better. It’s powerful in conjunction with the Silva Method.

These 2 methods together have helped me get out into orbit as opposed to other self-help books, which although well-intended, fails to deliver on their promises.

I hope this helps. Please remember this is just my experience which may differ from other people.

best systems of psych for understanding and development?
I know this is a little vague but in your opinion what book or video or courseware have you found to be the most enlightening regarding either understanding/predicting/counseling the behavior of others OR personal growth and development.
I’ve seen and read a little about the various schools of psychology but I’m sure in any given school what is readily available is nothing compared to the best teachings available within that school. Feel free to suggest obscure schools of psychology but I’m looking for specific books not just general schools. Thanks!!

The Vietnam War was a drawn out and seemingly purposeless war while it was happening. So many young soldiers went, did their part, and died without complaint or ever knowing everything that went on around them. But not all soldiers perished during this war, and one of those lucky survivors was Christopher Ronnau, who chose to publish a book on his time in Vietnam. Through this book, he told the world that while Vietnam was a terrible place to be, that he grew and gained maturity through his experiences there.
The author demonstrates his gained maturity quite a lot, but only a few events stuck in my mind. When he said that he things its preferable to go in with the first wave of soldiers during an invasion so that you are aware of everything that has gone on, he exhibits that he understands the lack of communication in the army and has learned to deal with it. That is a large show of maturity because he has identified a problem and found a way to live with it instead of simply complaining about it. Another time that his maturity stood out was when he said “I had labored under the foolproof assumption that though this might happen, [being shot] it was always the other guy who got hurt. Now I was the other guy” (Ronnau 271) This shows that he realizes that his assumption was only something to get himself through what he did every day without a mental breakdown and not exactly true. The last point of demonstrated maturity was when we said he finally saw that his country was leading its young soldiers to danger and death with their gullibility. He sees that all young soldiers enter the war with romanticized visions of war that were fed by the government to get young men to enlist without being aware what they were getting into. His realizing that shows that he finally understand war and what it is and what goes on in a combat zone, which are all things that helped him in his survival in the war and that he did not know before enlisting.
The author also grew as a person during his war experience, and through his book he exhibited his personal growth in a couple ways. At one point he discussed how the GI’s would get to watch TV shows without the commercials. He emphasized how much he missed commercials that he hated when he had them. At another point, he says he misses having clean clothes and showering regularly, and that his vision of a Utopia would have both of those things. That shows that those things he used to take for granted are taken for granted no longer. The fact that he not longer takes those things for granted shows that he has learned to appreciate the small things, which he might not have learned to do without experiencing what he did in Vietnam.
Vietnam was a place of terrible experiences for most that were there, but it was also a place of forced responsibility and maturity. The author demonstrated through his experiences how he has to become responsible and emotionally mature or perish, as many other unlucky soldiers did. Although Vietnam was a place that he would have wanted to avoid if he has been a bit wiser in his decision making, it is evident that what he gained there helped him later on in life.

Very good essay, but i found a couple of mistakes. Cancel the 2nd “that” in the last sentence of your first paragraph. Then the ‘has’ in in your second to last sentence should be ‘had’. You should also consider breaking your second paragraph into two. Then it will be perfect, at least from my point of view.

Are you serious about being rich and being successful?

Then read a copy of Robert J. Ringer’s “Winning Through Intimidation.” It’s from 1974, but it was one of the first books to pierce the veil of positive-thinking nonsense that infests so many self-help books.

It begins with a disillusioned businessman, Robert J. Ringer, who quickly learns that all people in the business world are out to screw him out of money, ideally without damaging their “reputations” as “honest” people with “integrity.”

Read it. The stuff about real estate is technical but it is limited. I re-read it every few years in order to remind myself of the scurrilous backstabbing people are capable of.
