Finding A Balanced Parenting Style
Author: Millard Franco
Although many everyone has their own different styles of parenting, there are 4 main styles of parenting. These four different styles are authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and than uninvolved.
Uninvolved parenting is really just a lack of parenting. It is hard on children and should not be the way of parenting. Kids suffer issues such as feelings of rejection, lack of self esteem, and issues with trust. In the long run the children are harmed emotionally.Authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive styles describe a range of styles. Authoritarian parents are at one end of the spectrum. This kind of parenting tends to be high in structure and low in responsiveness. Permissive parents are then located at the opposite side of the scale. This parenting style tends to be low in structure and high in responsiveness. Authoritative parenting tends to be located in the middle of the scale, and is a balanced parenting style. There are many different parenting styles out there; these three represent a very wide range scale.
Structure is important to authoritative parenting. There are clear rules and limits and children know that there are consequences for their actions. Routines and schedules help provide a sense of stability for children. For example, a child knows when bedtime is, and a teen knows when curfew is, and both know what will happen if he or she is late. Stability in this sense allows children to feel secure, and that, it turn, allows for an all around better atmosphere. There is flexibility in authoritative parenting that allows the parent to bend the rules on occasion. Like if a child would like to stay up late to watch a favorite TV show.
Authoritative parents also are responsive. Children have a voice in the family and the input is value. Mom and dad respond to their children’s needs and problems and are sensitive to their children’s emotions and feelings.
In authoritative parenting, decisions are made collaboratively. Children have a choice, but only up to a certain point. Parents should listen to their input, and take into consideration what the child is saying, and feeling, but the final decision lies with the parents. These types of families function as a team, and different needs are accommodated for. This results in less conflict and more balance.
Authoritative parenting is a balanced parenting style. Structure and responsive are both high. The parents are involved with their child’s life, and are flexible, but they still are parents. There are structures, limits, rules and boundaries, but they are not rigid. Children with this kind of parenting tend to do well socially and functionally in life. They tend to not get into problems and not to have serious emotional problems. This type of parenting is balanced, and produces balanced children.

Balanced Literacy?
Can anyone tell me about the elements of a balanced literacy program?
Balanced Literacy is a framework designed to help all students learn to read and write effectively. You try to find a balance of read alouds, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading. In addition, shared writing, interactive writing, writer’s workshop, and independent writing. The balance between reading and writing allows students to receive the teaching needed in order to reach grade level status, while allowing students to work at a level that is not too difficult for them.
What is the main difference between a Whole Language and Balanced Literacy program?
What are some simple ways to distinguish between the two?
A balanced literacy program gives you some simple sentences nad more advanced ones. These would be the ones most useful for conversation and reading as well as understanding in another language. writting in that language is sometimes included.
A whole language program includes everything and usually starts at the most basic witing and comperhesion level. This usually means it takes several years to become literate. And occassionally includes extras such as history of the language, cultural forms, idioms, slang, etomology…
Basically a balanced tries to balencle the literacy out to mid range for the average person to get by and be understood using the second language.
Think ESL verses twelve grade levels of writing and comperhension, and speaking compressed into a serries or courses.
Balanced literacy courses some times skip over the very simple sentence structure for ones used more often. Where as whole language program use the simple structures as building blocks in understanding.
Who has ideas for 6th grade Reading Specialist position?
I am currently a fifth grade teacher but have an interview in a new district for a 6th grade reading specialist position. In addition to Balanced Literacy, can anyone offer additional strategies that they know of/use in this position? I do not know what curriculum/program they have but am looking for specific examples in building reading/writing skills for both struggling and gifted students. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
PS. The position is located in NY metro area.

What is included (and how would I go about including) in a balanced literacy program?
“Balanced Literacy is a framework designed to help all students learn to read and write effectively. The program stands firmly on the premise that all students can learn to read and write. This balance between reading and writing allows students to receive the teaching needed in order to reach grade level status, while allowing students to work at a level that is not frustrating for them.”
i am a teacher at a school that has an excellent balanced literacy framework, and it has improved our reading and writing scores quite a bit. it is only in its beginning stages, so we’re very hopeful for the future! the listed site is all about balanced literacy. read through it and apply its premises to your classroom. good luck!
Tell me what you think about this paper?
Some educators debate whether to add an hour to school each day to allow high school students can have two fifteen-minute break and longer lunch breaks. Some educators like this idea because they think giving students more break during the day will help them to be more alert in class. Other educators do not like this idea because they think a longer school day will only make students more tired and less able to concentrate on their work. Schools usually have one full period to allow students to have a lunch and study hall, for the first half students will be able to have a study hall and/or lunch for half the period and then go to lunch and/or study hall. Some students believe that if they had two fifteen-minute they would be able to do homework that is incomplete for a later class and/or they would be able to go to teachers for extra help if they are available. Students use study halls to do work or just relax for a period. I believe that students should just have one break and that’s for a lunch/study; if students had two fifteen-minute breaks in the day they would as some educators believe “slack off” and lose concentration due to students interactions during these breaks.
Some educators believe that the breaks would better to help students be more energized during the day helping them concentrate better during the day. The Waterloo Region District School Board has begun making these changes in elementary schools to help better figure out if what they are doing is really helping the kids in a way that helps them do better in the following fields academic performance, having a balanced nutrition, increased physical activity, time for learning during the school day, and literacy program that provides an excellent opportunity for teachers to fine-tune the literacy initiative that they have been developing for a number of years. They have found that there is an increase in all these fields due to the extra breaks during the school day. They are now developing a plan to make this act possible in the High Schools in the county.
President Obama has even stated that longer school days would help to increase learning capabilities in all students K-12. Some parents and educators find this a bad idea due to the lack of time actually spent on school work during the school day. Some parents also believe that if students had extracurricular activities after school that would extended into the night making the children unable to do homework and sleep after school. Instead the educators who presented this act to add an hour would find something much more serious going on than lack of sleep. With students who don’t sleep more than 9 hours at night have been found to lack energy during the school day and are found in the lower 10-15% of their class. While this is only a problem with kids on a regular school day results have shown that due to an increase in the school day; high schoolers have no decreased in attendance and school work is not being completed on time or not at all.
As for my opinion I believe that schools should not be extended due to lack of sleep and time after school to finish any work that may come along. Students don’t need an extra break if they did they would take a study hall to help them prepare for tests and do any homework from other classes as well as get help from other teachers. There are breaks during the normal school day which is called passing period high school kids are able to talk to other students and use the restroom and drinking fountain if needed during the day. We don’t need any extended time to where we can just fool around and hang with friends plus a normal school day allows student to go to appointments after school where as if u had the extended school day offices would be closed and students would have to go during school which interrupts their learning during the school day.
We can see both sides have strong arguments in with they provide detail about why the school day should be increased or not be increased and left it the same and what effects it would hold on students throughout the next 4 years of high school. Facts have been given and arguments have been made, some found this to be insightful (useful) information about an increase in the normal school day for students. Others found it to be useless facts upon useless facts about extending the school day. I believe that the same school hours should be kept in all schools not just the one I go to. Facts have shown that with extended school hours come dire consequences for students in the future.
its pretty good : )
