    Teacher preparation/ alternative certification programs?
When taking the alternative route to teaching, are you just as likely to get a job as someone who took the traditional route?

    Pros and Cons of each?

You will be lucky to find any alternative programs of value in this economy.

If you live in Texas – or a few other states – they leave the alternative program entirely up to you….

A value program, supplies you with all the necessary classes, helps you pass tests, and *finds you a position*. Thats the key – those programs are almost all gone as there are no positions. (with the exception of some very large urban districts) My district is the 2nd largest in the US – and unless you are a secondary math teacher with a mathematics degree – there is no alternative program here.

Some states which have the do it yourself system – still advertise the alternative…but candidates find out there are no positions to even begin the program.

Are you as likely? no. districts first choice is a highly qualified, certified teacher – and with all the layoffs in the last year- they are around.

I know my concerns maybe rambling on but ..I am concerned about the lost children. In our board we don’t have any place for the children that are between re tarted and put into the mainstream. We need an in between place for them. You never know, they could succeed and probably will as a bricklayer, a builder, a printer, welder or anything they can be. But……………. They all need encouragement. That is our Job!

Is there an Alternative Route to Teacher Certification at University of Bridgeport?
To any teachers who became certified to teach in Connecticut through an Alternative Route to Teacher Certification program, did you take courses at University of Bridgeport? I am asking because I was told that there is an ARC program at UB but I can’t find any information.

I am not sure, you should probably call them and ask as well as your the Connecticut Department of Education to make sure you aren’t having one pulled over on you. Because of NCLB schools rarely want those who take alternative routes to become certified since these teachers are rarely considered “Highly Qualified” teachers.

Is the alternative teacher certification program better than going the?
    Education major route in college?

    • JOSEPH N A says:

Yes and No. It is a simpler route for those who already have a degree. What you would spend in a 4 year college for a degree you can still get the certification for just a fraction of the cost. However, what you miss out is the total package of the education field. You’ll miss out on techniques and theories which will help you a lot when you have you’re own class. I went through an alt. program, and if I could I would have much rather gone through and studied education at a 4 year institute.

Fastest track for teacher certification (MAT program or alternative credentialing while working)?
Which route is the fastest way to becoming a certified teacher? A masters program? Or a program for alternative credentialing where you work and study for your certification along the way? I already have three degrees; sociology, nursing (bachelors) and a masters in public health. Please advise. Thanks.

Four year degree and complete the certification concurrent, so four years. A Masters is an additional year normally.
